Description

W. H.- START.
Dumping-Wagon.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WM. H. START, OF SMYRNA, DELAYVARE.
DUIVIPINGr-WAGON.
Specification of Letters Patent N0. 0,098, dated February G, 1849.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. START, of S1nyrna, in the county 0f Kent ancl St-ate of Delaware, have inventecl certain nevv ancl useful I1nprovernents in Tilt OI' Tipping Wagons, of which the following is a full and exact clescription, reference being had to the annexecl clrawing 0f the same, making part 0f this specification.
The nature 0f 1ny invent-ionand improve- 1nent consists in so arranging the bocly 0f a Wagon, that lt 1nay be run back 0n friction wheels, until its center of gravity is brought over the axletree 0f t-l1e bind wheels, when it is tipped 01 tiltecl up t0 dump 01' discharge its loacl, springs being arranged 130 prevent any suclclen concussion or a1, when the box is turnecl ancl slips down.
The accompanying clrawing represents the Wagon witl1 the b0x (A) tilted up, this box in its general construction is of ehe usual form, and fits between the sicle rails (a) of the frame, but not too tightly t0 prevent its slicling easily; on the botto1n 0f the rear encls ofthe side pieces (Z2) of ehe box, are cavities 0 c, ancl at tl1eir front ends friction pulleys w w, arrangecl in a similar manner ancl for the same purpose as those hereinafter describecl in the side pieces (Z) 0f the frame. Across the micldle of tbe bottorn 0f the bocly is placecl the rocl (Z which is f0r the purpose 0f catching 0n the hooks (e e) t0 arrest the backwarcl motion of the body, and to for1n an axis 011 which '1t is tiltecl, this IOCl, I prefer t0 1nake 0f iron, but it may be macle of WOOCl ancl is attachecl to a spring (f) which Will prevent any sudden ar that otherwise might be procluced by the tilting of the bocly.
Tl1e wheels g, axletrees h, ancl to-ngue Z are constructecl ancl arrangecl as in com1non wagons, 01 in any convenient way; the front ancl bind bolsters j and k are connected by strong pieces 0f scantling Z Z upon Which che b0cly (A) is placecl, and t0 which the s1cle rails (a) are attached, near the bind encl ancl upon tbe upper surface of the side pieces Z Z are fixed the friction rollers m Which are f0r tl1e sicles of bocly t0 run 0n when it is 1n0vecl back t0 be tippecl; near the front encls 0f the side pieces cavities (n) are macle for the friction rollers of the front encls 0f the b0x t0 rest in. The bottoms of these cavities slope downward atan angle of about 30 in order that pulleys by descencling upon them 1nay graclually ease the box clown, until its sicles (b) con1e in contact with ancl rest upon the side pieces (Z Z). The bolsters are 0011- nectecl by a center piece (Z) parallel t0 the sicles (Z) having vertical mortises macle through it near its encls, in which mortises bent levers 0 are placed. On the short and upper end of these levers friction pulleys are afllxecl, ancl to the longer and lower encls are jointed the r0cls 79 p which are connectecl by joints 01 links t0 the lever q which turns upon a pivot (r) that projects fro1n the lower sicle 0f the center piece (Z). This system of levers ancl connecting rocls is f0r the purpose of raising tl1e body up fro1n the sicles (Z) a sufficient height t0 clear the frietion pulleys fro1n the cavities 0 n, when the lever g is movecl towarcl the bind wheels, cl1e short ends of the levers (0) are raised, pressing the friction rollers in their encls against t-he inclined planes s s 0n the bott-om of Ehe box, which planes are so placecl as t0 cause the b0x t0 run back at the sarne ti1ne that lt is raisecl; if the 1noanentum given by the inclinecl planes s s is n0t sufficientto throw the box far enough back, the attenclant lays hold 0f it with bis band ancl with ease pushes it back upon tl1e friction rollers until the cross bar (Z co1nes into contact witb. the hooks e, l1e eben lifts the front encl 0f the box sufficiehtly high to allow the contents t0 slicle out, which being done lt is again righted, ancl movecl forwarcl t0 its place 0f rest ancl fastenecl by inserting the bolt t through the holes u 01? tl1e sicle pieces b Z. Unless the cavit-ies are 1nade in the sicle pieces t0 allow the box t0 settle clown upon the fra1ne, the whole weight 0f the box and l0acl would have to be supportecl by the axes 0f the friction rollers, which are necessarily slencler, ancl insufllcient to sustain f01 any length 0f ti1ne the shocks ancl strains t0 which they woulcl be subjectecl uncl er such a loacl. On the 0ther band, the l0fllLl box woulcl be founcl very cliflicult to be 1novecl back t0 be til tecl, unless raisecl up fron1 c0ntact with the fra1ne, and the resistance diminished by friction wheels 01 some equivalent clevice.
VVhat I claim as n1y invent-ion and clesire t0 secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement- 0f tl1e cavities c ancl n in combinatiom with tl1e friction rollers m ancl w substantially as herein describecl, whereby the box is n10vecl backward ancl forward 2 e,oss
(preparatory t0, and after tiltirig its load) my band am]. aflixed my seal this twenty easily and with but little friction, and when first day of September 1848. in p1ace rests upon and in contact with the sides of the franie throughout its efitire WILLIAM START 5 leng'th, which greatly increases the strength Witnesses:
and durability of the Wagon. ROBT. LUSBY,
