NITED I STATES PAT ENT FFICE.
JAMES P. TWOMEY AND ROBERT C. MILLS, OF ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA.
SUBSOIL ATTACHMENT FOR RIDING-PLOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,850, dated August 30, 1898.
Application filed February 16, 1898. Serial No. 670.552. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JAMES P. TWOMEY and ROBERT C. MILLS, citizens of the United States, residing at Anaheim, in the county of Orange and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Subsoil Attachments for Riding-Flows; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in subsoil attachments for riding-plows; and the object is to simplify theconstruction and increase the efficiency and at the same time provide an inexpensive and durable device of this kind.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The accompanying drawings show our invention in the best form now known to us but many changes in the details might be made within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit of our invention as set forth in the claim at the end of this specification.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention in the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow with our subsoil attachment connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 shows another way of detachably securing the subsoil attachment to the plow-beam.
1 denotes the plow-beam, and 2 a horizontal brace consisting of the parallel arms 3 3, the forward free ends of which encompass the beam and are removably secured thereto by means of the bolt 4. The rear ends of said arms 3 S are connected by an integral yoke 5,
in which is journaled the upper end of the bifurcated bracket 6, carrying the follower or ground wheel '7 8 8 denote vertical uprights formed integral with the arms 3' 3, and their upper ends are connected by a bolt 9, which forms the fulcrum-point for the hand-lever 10, the free end of which is vertically adjustable in the notched rack 12, removably secured to the beam 1 by the bolt 13. The rear end of said lever is pivoted to the upper end of the vertically-adjustable standard 14, the lower end of which carries the subsoiler 15.
16 denotes a horizontal brace pivoted at its forward end to the lower end of the plowbeam and at its rear end to the adjustable standard 14. This brace 16 is exactly the same length as the rear end of the hand-lever 10 from its fulcrum-point to the point where it is pivoted to the adjustable standard 14. Consequently in adjusting the said standard it always moves perpendicularly.
In Fig. 3 we have shown a pair of vertically parallel braces 17 and 18, extending horizontally rearward from the plow-beam, and their rear ends are fixed to the upper end of the bifurcated bracket 19, the lower end of which carries the follower-wheel.
20 denotes the subsoiler-standard secured to the same parallel sides of said braces 17 and 18 by means of the U-shaped yoke or clamp 21, which extends diagonally across the outer face of said standard, as shown.
22 represents the lower brace pivotally connecting the standard 20 and the plow-beam, as in the first instance.
Having thus fully described our invention, what We claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- The combination with the plow-beam 1 and the notched rack 12 detachably secured thereto, of the horizontal brace 2, removably secured to said beam and formed with the integral uprights 8 S and yoke 5, of the bifurcated bracket 6 journaled in said yoke and the ground-wheel 7 j ournaled in said bracket, the hand-lever 10 fulcru med in said uprights, the Vertically-ad j ustable standard 14 pivoted at its upper end to said lever and the horizontally-pivoted brace 16 connecting said standard 14 and plow-beam 1, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing witnesses. JAMES P. TWOMEY. ROBERT C. MILLS. Witnesses:
H. A. MoWILLIAMs, J. J. HUNTER.
