COMBINATION TABLE AND BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,763, dated August 23, 1898.
' Application filed March 16, 1897- To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES EDWARD LINDH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Table and Bed; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to furniture; and the object in view is to provide a combined table and bed capable of being converted from a table into a bed, or vice versa, and folded compactly so as to occupy but little space.
The improved article of furniture is especially adapted for camping and yachting parties by reason of its lightness and compactness, but is also useful as an ordinary article of household furniture. The article is equipped with a suitable frame detachably connected thereto and adapted to support a canopy in the form of an awning for protecting the occupant of the bed from the rays of the sun, or a mosquito-net, or a waterproof cover, thus adapting the bed to be used in all kinds of weather, either out of doors or in. The several attachments referred to are removable and sectional, so that they may be stored within a compartment formed in the upper portion of the combined table and bed, where they will be out of the way when not in use and at hand when required.
The detailed objects and advantages of the invention will be pointed out in the course of the subjoined description.
The invention consists in an improved article of furniture embodying certain novel features and details of construction herein.- after specifically pointed out, illustrated in the drawings, and incorporated in the claims hereto appended. i
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 a perspective View of the article folded to constitute a table. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the same, showing the relation of the legs when folded. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the article when extended to form a bed, also showing a pair of standards and ridge-pole detachably connected thereto and semi No. 627,774. (No model.)
the waterproof cover placed thereon, said cover being partially broken away to better illustrate the invention. Fig. at is a longitudinal section through the bed. Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken centrally thereof and showing the spreading-braces. Fig. 6 is a reverse perspective view of the awning. 7 is a detail section through one end of the awning, showing the manner of folding the same. Fig. 8 is a detail View of the mosquito net.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a pair of end frames, each comprising two corner-posts 2, arranged at a suitable distance forms the head of the bed when the device is used as such. The rails 4 and 5 extend a considerable distance above the tops of the end frames and side legs or frames hereinafter described, so as to form a compartment 6 for the reception of the several attachments ofthe piece of furniture when the same are removed and not in use.
One of the corner-posts 2 of each end frame is made considerably wider than its mate, as shown at 7, for a purpose that will appear; Connected hingedly to each corner-post 2 is a frame or side leg 8, the same comprising spaceduprights 1, connected at theirtops by cross-pieces 10 and at a lower point by other cross-pieces 11. These legs or frames 8' are connected together at their meeting edges by means of hinges 12, arranged to allow said legs or frames to fold inward, as shown in Fig. 2. The hinges 18, which connect said legs or frames to the end frames 1, are arranged out of transverse alinement with each other, so that one pair of legs on one side of the article will fold inward in a different plane from those on the other side, thus allowing one set of legs to occupy a position near the head of the bed, while the other set occupies a position near the foot of the bed, both sets, however, folding into close and Fig.
compact relation when the device is folded for use as a table'and as clearly shown in Fig. 2. ed outward, the central hinges 12 are also located out of transverse alinement. The legs or frames 8 are held extended or are spread laterally by means of interposed spreaders or braces 14, the said braces being preferably tubular in form and constructed of metal and provided at their outer ends with eyes or openings 15 to fit over stationary hooks 16 on the inner surface of said legs or frames, as shown. One or two of said spreaders or braces may be employed, as may be found necessary or desirable, and when the device is folded to form a table these Spreaders-or braces may be detached and placed in the compartment 6.
17 designates a piece of canvas or other textile fabric which when the article is extended to form a. bed is stretched upon the folding frame, said canvas being of sufficient strength to support the weight of a person lying thereon and being connected at one end to one of the endframes 1 and at its opposite end to the other end frame. At an intermediate point the side edges of the canvas 17 are provided with reinforced eyelets 18, adapted to fit over studs or projections 19, extending upwardly from the frames or legs 8, so as to hold the canvas stretched transversely and prevent too great strain thereon. When the device is folded, the eyelets 18 and studs or projections 19 are first disengaged, which allows the canvas to fold upon itself as the end frames are brought together.
The table-top (indicated at 20) is hinged to one of the end rails 4:, so as to fold over into a horizontal or vertical position, 'as shown in the drawings, and when in vertical position it is held sustained by means of a hook 21, pivotally connected to the under side of the top 20 and adapted to engage an eye'22 upon the inner surface of one of the side rails 5. An eye 23 is arranged on the underside of the top 20 to receive the hook when not in use. The table-top 20 is also provided upon its under side with eyes 24 to receive hooks 25, secured to the side rails 5 for holding the top in its closed. position.
26-designates a folding extension-leaf hinged to the foot-rail 4c of the bed and adapted to fold downward by the side thereof, said leaf being hinged to a pair of brackets 27, as shown, so as to leave space between the inner edge of the leaf and the foot-board 4.
When the legs or frames 8 are fold provided upon their outer sides with socketpieces 30, into which are adapted to be removably fitted the lower extremities of a pair of posts or standards 31. Each of said posts or standards is sectional, consisting of two portions 32, screw-threaded at their adjacent ends and detachably connected by means of a thimble or ferrule 33, whereby the sections of the standards may be disassociated for enabling them to be placed in the compartment 6. At their upper ends the standards 31 have circumferential shoulders 34 to support the .end vertical sleeves 35 of a'ridge-pole 36.
This ridge-pole is also made sectional, consisting of two portions, the adjacent ends of -which are threaded to receive a connecting or coupling thimble or sleeve 3'7, whereby the parts of the ridge-pole may be disassociated for storage in the compartment 6. The standards 31 project above the end sleeves of the ridge-pole to receive the other attachments, which will now be described.
38 designates an awning which is stretched upon a pair of transverse bars 39. These bars are hinged together at their contiguous ends and preferably at one side of the center, the two parts of the bar being held locked in alinement with each other by means of a hook 40 on one section engaging an eye ll on the other section and on the under side of the bar. Each of the end bars 39 is also provided with a reinforced opening 42, adapted to receive one of the upper ends of the standards 31. In this manner the awning 38 is supported upon the standards 31 and ridge-pole and will be found of great use in hot sunshiny weather for protecting the occupant of the bed from the rays of the sun.
4L3 designates a mosquito-net having downwardly-diverging side portions and triangular-shaped end portions adapted to entirely surround the bed, the said net being provided with eyelets 44:, adapted to fit over the upper ends of the standards 31, while the portion of the net intervening between said eyelets is supported upon the ridge-pole above de scribed. This net may be used to great advantage at certain seasons of the year and in localities where mosquitos and other insects abound.
45 design ates a water-shed or canopy which is made from any suitable waterproof material adapted to be folded compactly and placed within the compartment 6. This water-shed or canopy is formed, like the mosquito-net, with downwardly-diverging side portions and triangular-shaped end portions 46, whereby it is adapted to entirely surround the bed and protect the occupant in falling weather. The water-shed or covering 45 is also provided at its top with eyelets 47 to fit over the upper ends of the standards 31, and the central portion thereof is supported upon the ridge-pole and prevented from sagging.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the device may be readily converted from a table into a bed, or vice'versa, and
that when used as a bed, by reason of the several attachments described, the occupant thereof may be protected from the rays of the sun, from mosquitos and other insects, and
from falling weather. It will further be seen that all of the attachments may be readily detached and stored in the compartment 6 beneath the top of the table, where they will be out of the way when not in use and where they will be readily accessible when required. The article is especially useful for camping and yachting parties, although its use is not intended to be limited thereto, as it also constitutes a very convenient household article.
It will of course be understood that the article is susceptible of many changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction, which may accordingly be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of end frames, jointed side frames hinged together and to the end frames and adapted to fold inwardly, head and side rails rigidly attached to one of the end frames, and a foot-rail to the other, said rails extending above said frames and form- 3o ing (when the latter is folded) a box or compartment, a folding bed-bottom attached to the end frames, sockets on the end frames, standards adapted to said sockets, a ridgepole adapted to be connected with the said standards, and a canopy adapted to be sustained by the standards and ridge-pole and to envelop the entire structure.
2. A table adapted to be extended to form a bed, said table comprising end frames, folding legs or frames interposed between said end frames and hingedly connected thereto and to each other, side and end rails projecting above the end and side frames to form a compartment or receptacle, textile fabric stretched over the frame as a whole and forming the bottom of said compartment, means for supporting the side edges of said fabric at intermediate points, and a top hinged to one of said rails, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
