Beit known that I, LOUIS F. ARNO, of Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screen-Doors and Window-Screens g and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain improvements in screen-doors and Vwindow-screens, and more particularly to a novel device for connecting the same to the frame of the door or window, by the use of which mutilation of the sill is absolutely avoided and the use of hinges is unnecessary.

To these ends my invention comprises certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts whereby the above and other important advantages are gained, as will be hereinafter described, and specifically defined in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a front view of a screen-door having my invention applied thereto, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of one of the devices used upon the door in place of the ordinary hinge. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a socket used upon the frame of the door. Fig. 4 is a front view of a window-screen having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 5 is a View similar to Fig. 2, showing a square bolt; and Fig. 6 is a View similar to Fig. 3, showinga square socket for the reception of the square bolt of Fig. 5.

Similar reference-numerals indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

l represents the casing of an ordinary door, provided at its top and bottom, near one side thereof, with sockets 2, which are intended to engage spring-bolts3, arranged upon the upper and lower end of the frame of the screen-door 4. The sockets 2 are provided with laterally-projecting teeth 2, which are driven into the frame of the door, and with central openings 2b to receive the ends of the bolts 3, above referred to, and in this manner the screendoor or window-screen is held in place and pivots are formed upon which the screen-door shall swine'.

The bolts 3 pass through a casing 5, provided with perforated ears 5? `,to receive screws, bywhich means said casings are held in place upon the frame, and the bolt 3, near its upper end, is provided with an opening to receive one end of the spring 6, the other end of which bears against the opposite end of the casing, and thus serves to keep the ends of the bolts beyond the casing. The other ends of the bolts may be iiattened in any desired manner. y

Springs 7 7 are arranged at each side of the door, one end of each spring being fastened to the frame of the screen-door and the other end being secured to the casingl of the door proper, which serve as a means for bringing the door back again to its normal closed position after having been opened, and the edge of the screen-door frame adjacent to the casing of the door is preferably beveled to give freer movement thereto.

8 represents a strip of wood which is arranged at the opposite side of the casing l, being provided at each end with a spring-bolt 3, which is adapted to enter and engage a similar socket 2 to the onesheretofore de scribed, except that the ends of the bolts and the openings in the sockets are made square to prevent the strip from turning, and the central inner edge of the strip is provided with a socket 9 to receive the end of a bolt 10, which is carried by the screen-door upon its inner side. i

In applying my invention to a window I arrange the sockets 2 upon the outside of the casing and provide the frame with bolts 3, similar to those above described, to engage the said sockets; and I also provide the frame with a bolt 10, which engages a socket 9 in the casing in a similar manner to that just described. v

It will thus be seen that my invention may be quickly and easily applied to screen-doors or window-screens and forms a substantial and desirable substitute for the ordinary hinges now used; and it also avoids mutilation of the casing and provides a door which can swing both ways. It is also obvious that the door can be easily removed by withdrawing the bolts from the sockets and that the sockets themselves can be removed and placed upon another casing should the cir IOO cumstanoes require; and it will also be obvious that the strip S may be dispensed with entirely and the socket 9 arranged Within the casing of the door; butin practice I prefer to use this strip, as the socket therein, being countersunk, prevents mutilation ofthe casing, which is desirable when the screen-doors are likely to be removed for use elsewhere.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with the frame of a door or window, of a narrow strip at one side of the same, angular spring-bolts at the ends of said strip for holding the same in place, angular sockets in the door or window frame to receive said bolts and prevent the same from turning, a screen-frame, bolts at the top and bottom thereof, and sockets in the door or Window frame to receive said bolts, the latter being adapted to turn in their sockets and to serve in connection therewith as hinges for said screen-frame.

2. The combination with the frame of a door or Window, of a screen-frame,` disconnected, spring-actuated bolts oppositely disposed on said screen-frame adjacent to one edge thereof to serve as hinge-pintles adapted to be withdrawn by hand, removable socket-pieces on the door or window frame normally engaging the said bolts, a narrow strip secured to the door or window frame at the swinging edge of the screen-frame by spring-actuated, anguiar bolts on the strip, removable plates on the door or window frame having angular sockets engaged by said angular bolts whereby said strip is prevented from turning, and means for securing the screen-frame to said strip, all substantially as described.
