W. ZULLER. FILTERING FAUCET- (Application filed m 2s, 1897.)

UNITED "STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM ZOLLER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
FILTERING-FAUCETQ SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,721, dated August 23, 1898.
Application filed May 25, 1897. Serial No. 638,070. No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I,WILLIAM ZOLLER, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filtering-Faucets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
a My invention relates to filtering-faucets.
My object is to provide a filtering-faucet of simple and cheap construction from which either filtered or unfiltered water can be obtained and this object is accomplished by the provision of a faucet having a novel form of plug-valve in connection with a filter of improved construction, the detailed construction of the various parts appearing more fully hereinafter and the novel features being recited in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved faucet, and Fig. 2 a sectional elevation.
The numeral 1 designates the faucet-casing, provided with the usual spout 2, and into this casing there leads the pipe connection 3.
' The numeral 4 designates a plug-valve, having the handle 5, which is provided with a pointed end 5, and this plug-valve is pro vided with a longitudinal waterway 6 inside thereof and has three openings 7, 8, and 9. The opening 7 is elongated and adapted to receive waterlfrom the pipe connection whether the end 5 be pointed inwardly toward the pipe connection or outwardly toward the spout. When the said end is pointed inwardly, the opening 8 is in alinement with the spout and fluid communication is established between the connection and the spout,
' shown at 10, the same being connected, through a screw-threaded coupling 10, to the faucet-casing 1.
11 and 13 indicate a double cylinder, or an outer cylinder 11 and an inner cylinder 13, between which is inclosed the filtering agent, (in dicated at 12.) These cylinders are provided with perforations to permit the passage of water to the filtering material, whence it escapes through perforations near the upper end of the inner cylinder into the latter, passing thence to the delivery spout or cook. The cylinders are connected at their upper ends by a cap 13, covering said end, and the perforations in the outer cylinder 11 are preferably at or near the lower end thereof, and the said cylinder may be made somewhat shorter than the inner one, as indicated in the drawings, to permit the water to enter at said end and to rise through the filtering material to near the top of the inner cylinder. The cylinder 13 is screw-threaded at 1a to engage the nipple on a plate or disk 14, resting in a chamberin the upper end of a cap 15, screwed on the lower end of the cylindrical casing 10 and provided with a delivery spout or cook 16.
It will be observed that when the valve is in proper arrangement the water will pass down into the filter-body and around the cylinder therein. In order to be turned off through the cook 16, the water will have to filter into the opening 13 in said cylinder. When it is desirable to clean the sediment from the filter-body, this can be done by open= ing the flushcock, whereupon the water within said body, together with the sediment,
will be forced out.
It will be seen that with my filtering-faucet unfiltered water can be had by turning the valve in one direction and filtered water ob tained by turning it in the opposite direction, while cleansing can be had quickly and easily.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a filtering faucet, the combination with a pipe connection, a valve-casing and a spout leading into said casing, of a filter hav ing a draw-01f cock and a plug-valve provided with fiuid passages adapted to bring the spout and pipe connection in fluid communication when turned in one direction and the pipe connection and filter in fluid communication when turned in another direction.
2. In a filteringfaucet, the combination with a valve-casing, a pipe connection leading thereto and a spout for the casing, of a filter connected to the casing below the spout and pipe connection, a draw-off cock for said filter, and a plug-valve having a longitudinal passage therein, a passage adapted to receive fluid from the pipe connection, and leading into the longitudinal passage, a second passage leading from the longitudinal passage and adapted for alinement with the spout, and a third passage leading to the longitudinal passage and adapted to afford communication With the filter, said latter passage being oifset from the passage last aforesaid.
3. In a filtering-faucet, the combination with a valve-casing having a pipe connection and a spout, of a filter-casing connected With the valve-casing and provided with a delivery WILLIAM ZOLLER.
