SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,717, dated August 23, 1898. Application filed April 16, 1898. Serial No. 677,838. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FRANK WILLIAMS and WILLIAM H. QUICKSALL, citizens of the United States, residing at Stewardson, in the county of Shelby and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Traction-Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in traction-wheels, and pertains to means for moving out through the rim of the wheel blocks which will prevent the slipping thereof, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of our invention is to provide a traction-wheel with blocks adapted to pass radially through the rim of the Wheel and beyond it for engaging the ground toprevent the slipping of the wheel, and to provide a lever journaled in the flanges of the hub of the wheel, having a crank-arm engaging a slot upon a band to which the blocks are attached, whereby the movement of the lever will rotate the band for either throwing the blocks out or throwing them in, as may be desired.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wheel with our invention attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a section cut vertically through the wheel, showing the band and connecting-rod for moving the friction-slot. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the actuating-band, which is journaled upon the hub of the wheel. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the operating-lever. Fig. 5 is a detached transverse sectional view of the wheelhub.
Referring now to the drawings, A is the band of a traction-wheel of the usual or any desired form; 13, the spokes; O, the hub, and D the flanges of the hub. The band or rim of the wheel is provided with transverse openings F, having inwardly projecting flanges at their inner side, through which the friction-blocks E move, are guided, and held.
11 is a band journaled upon the hub of the wheel and held in position at the center of the hub through the medium of the longitudinally-extending beads a, which are formed upon the hub at opposite sides of the band. This band is made of two parts, as shown,
whereby it'is adapted to be placed upon the hub of the Wheel or detached therefrom, as occasion may demand. This band is provided with a series of ears I), having perforations c, as shown, theears extending in a direction longitudinal the band, and to which the inner ends of the rods d are attached by bending their ends laterally, as shown. The outer ends of these rods d are provided with hooks passing through perforations in the inner end i of the friction-blocks E, which pass through the opening in the rim of the wheel.
One of the sections of the band is provided with radially-extending parallel arms f, and an operating-lever g has its ends journaled in the flanges D of the hub provided with a lateral bend 2', forming a crank-arm which en gages between the said arms of the band, the operating end of the lever projecting and adapted to engage a notched segment L, secured to the outer sides of the spokes of the wheel.
By means of this construction the frictionblocks can be thrown beyond the periphery of the wheel and withdrawn within the pe riphery at will and to any desired degree.
The construction here shown for actuating the friction-blocks is simple and yet effective in its result.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is-
1. A wheel comprising a rim having open ings, friction-blocks adapted to move through said openings, a band journaled upon the hub of the wheel, connections between the blocks and the band, the band having a radially-ere tending slotted member, an operating mem ber having its end j ournaled in the flanges of the wheel hub, said operating member having a crank-arm between the flanges engaging the slotted member of the band, the outer end of the operating member having a projecting handle, and a notched segment se= cured to the outer side of the spokes of the wheel, substantially as described.
2. A wheel comprising a rim having open ings therein, a hub having peripheral flanges, frictional blocks movable through the said rim-openin gs, a-band journaled upon the hub,
connections between the friction-blocks and the band, an operating member having its end journaled in the flanges of the hub and provided with a laterally-projecting operating portion between the flanges, the band having parallel arms between which the lateral portion of the actuating member is situated, theactuating member having one of its ends provided with an operating-handle outside of the flanges of the hub, substantially as described.
3. A Wheel comprising a rim having openin gs, frictional members movable through said openings, a band journaled upon the hub of the wheel having 1ongitudinally-extendin g ears provided with transverse openings, rods having their ends provided with hooks pass ing through the openings of the ears and the said friction members, an operating member witnesses.
