SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,661, dated August 23, 1898. 7 Application filed December 27, 1897. Serial No. 663,762. (No model.) Patented in England ge t mber 18, 1897, No. 21,482.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALBERT STEFAN Co- BENZL, chemist, residing at Hochst-0n-the- Main,Germany,haveinvented newand useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Photographic Developing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has been patented in Great Britain, dated September 18, 1897, N0. 2I,482.

This invention has for its object to provide an apparatus whereby photographic negatives, 850., taken on a tour or otherwise may be developed and fixed without the use of a dark room.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a detail.

The apparatus consists of a develo pin gtray A, covered on top for a portion of itslength, to which end are connected inlet and outlet pipes a for the solutions, bent at right angles, and having a common filling and emptying mouth Z), closed by a stopper, whereby the pouring in and out of the solutions may be effected without access of light. The tray is inclosed by a hinged cover 13, with flanged sides embracing those of the tray, this cover consisting for about two-thirds of its length of a frame fitted with superposed red and orange glass plates 0 D, forming a window for lighting the interior of the tray and being fitted in sliding shutters and inclosed by a hinged lid E. The other part of the cover is domed and provided on its inclined side with binocular eyepieces F, covered inside with an orange plate and closed by a sliding shutter G, which is only opened during observation. The bottom II consists of a red-glass plate covered by a hinged lid K. A sliding tube L may be fitted into the eyepieces to adapt them to different persons. The under side of the cover 13 is preferably polished to reflect light into the tray. F

The apparatus is used as follows: Bymeans of a light-excluding sleeve the plate is introducedinto the tray, the shutters of the window and eyepieces being closed, whereupon the developer is introduced in open light through the filling-orifice, and when it is desired to observe the progress of development the slide of the window is drawn with one hand and the eyes are applied close to the eyepieces. The shutter of the sight-holes is then opened with the other hand, whereby the operation can be sufficiently observed. \Vhen development is complete, the developer is poured oif and the fixing solution introduced, and after the time deemed necessary for fixing the plate can be removed.

Now, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:

1. A photographic developing apparatus comprising a tray, a cover therefor having an opening for admitting light, two superposed glass plates of different colors covering said opening, and fitting in sliding shutters and a lid hinged to the cover for screening said plates, substantially as described.

2. A photographic developing apparatus comprising a liquid-tight tray having its bottom composed of a colored-glass plate, an opaque lid hinged to the outside of the tray and adapted to cover said bottom, a cover fitting the upper part of the tray and containing an opening, one or more removable colored-glass screens covering said opening, and an opaque-lid hinged to the outside of the cover for covering said screens, substantially as described.

3. In a photographic developing apparatus, the combination with a tray A having a glass bottom II, lid K and pipes a, of a cover B hinged to said tray and carrying glass plates 0, D, hinged lid E, and a dome provided with eyepieces F, substantially as described.

4. In photographic developing apparatus, the combination with a tray, of a cover therefor having a domed portion, eyepieces on said domed portion, a hinged lid for the other portion, and colored-glass plates inside said eyepieces and under said lid, substantially as described.

5. In a photographic developing apparatus the combination with a glass plate covering the top of it and a hinged lid having a lightreflecting under side substantially as described.
