LEBRECHT STEINMULLER, OF GUMMERSBAOH, GERIWIANY.
METHOD O RIVETING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,633, dated August 23, 1898.
Application filed December 18, 1897. Serial No. 662,467. (No model.) Patented in Germany February 24, 1897,1l'o. 95,392; in France 111 16, 1897,1117. 267,941, and in Belgium J'une 21,1897,No.128,988-
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEBREOHT STEINMiiL- LER, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, and a resident of Gummersbach, in the Province of the Rhine, German Empire, have invented an Improved Method of Riveting, (for which patents have been obtained in Germany, No. 95,392, dated February 2 1, 1897; in France, No. 267,941, dated June 16, 1897, and in Belgium, No. 128,988, dated June 21, 1897,) of which the following is an exact specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved system of riveting, and has for its object to increase the strength, and consequently the safety, of the riveted joint. I attain this object by an improved method of boring the holes for the reception of the rivets in such manner that the said holes are not merely cylindrical, but are further provided with recesses, cavities, or the like so arranged that during the subsequent process of forming the rivet-head or closing over the rivet (while in a red-hot state or otherwise) the body or shank of the rivet is caused to correspondingly enter such recesses in the boiler-plates or the like to be connected by means of such rivets. These recesses can take the form of annular collars or shoulders, or, in a modified construction, can extend in the form of a spiral or a screw-thread throughout the entire depth of the rivet-hole.
In order to make my invention clear, I refer to the accompanying drawings, in which two forms of construction are shown; but I do not limit myself entirely to such constructions, as it will be apparent that I can vary the same without departing from the principle of my invention.
The characteristic featuresof my improvements reside in the fact that the strain upon the rivet-head is considerably relaxed or released, which, as mentioned in the preamble of the specification, must have the result of considerably increasing the strength and safety of the joint connected by such rivets.
In the construction shown in Figure 1 the strain upon the rivet is taken up by or falls upon the collars or bulb-like projections and also on the rivet-heads, whereas in the construction as shown in Fig. 2, in which construction the rivet-shank is in the form of a spiral or screw-thread, the strain is gradually distributed over the entire surface of the rivet.
It is well known that in the case of round rivetsz'. e. rivets with a cylindrical shankthe strain of the joint is almost entirely upon the rivet-heads. It is also, of course, well known that in the process of cooling the shanks of the rivets must contract or shrink, and if this shrinkage exceeds certain maximum limits that the rivet-heads must spring ofi, the result of which being the loosening or possibly the entire breaking of the joint. By the employment of my improved rivets, howevero'. e., by the employment of my systemeven should the head of the rivet spring ofi the joint would not be broken, as the aforesaid projections of my improved rivets form considerable bearing surfaces, said bearing-surfaces, according to the construction shown in Fig. 1, beingbulb-like projections, or as shown in Fig. 2, where the projections are in the form of a screw-thread. These bulb-like projections or screw-threads are produced by the rivets being forced while hot into the recesses of the rivet-hole provided as hereinbefore described. My improved system has also the advantage that the increased bearing-surface of the rivetshank accelerates the cooling of the rivet and also increases the tightness of the joint.
Referring again to the drawings, Fig. 1
shows the joint in accordance with my im-. proved system, in which the, shank a of the rivet is provided with two annular collars or projections so arranged that one of said collars or projections is in each plate.
7 In Fig.2 is shown a joint connected by a rivet the shank of which is provided with projections b in the form of a spiral or screw therein, and then upsetting the rivet, thus forming the head thereupon and expanding the body portion into the recesses in each plate, substantially as shown.
2. The herein-described method of rivet-' ing, consisting in forming holes in the parts to be united, the Walls of each hole intermediate the edges in each part beingprovided with screw-threads or the like, inserting a 10 hot rivet therein, and then upsetting the rivet, thus forming the head thereupon and expanding the body portion into the recesses in each plate, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribr 5 ing witnesses.
