Description

No. 609,632. Patented Aug. 23, I898.
H F. SCHONHDFF.
LAND ROLLER.
(Application filed Jan. 20, 1898.) N n M o d el 2 Sheets-Sheet 2.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANZ SGI-IONHOFF, OF UNIONTOWN, MISSOURI.
LAN D-ROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,632, dated August 23, 1898.
Application filed anuary 20, 1898. Serial No. 667,208. (No model.)
town, in the county of Perry and State of Mis souri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Land-Rollers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
It is the object of my invention to furnish adevice that can be used as a land roller or pulverizer and in which the cylinder or roller is furnished with a surface capable of presenting either sharp edges or a series of angled corrugations to the soil to be rolled or crushed.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure I illustrates a top or plan view of my device in which a portion of one of the cylindrical rollers is broken away. Fig. II illustrates an end view thereof with the angle-irons, which will be described hereinafter, set apex outward. Fig. III is an end view of one of the cylindrical rollers in which the angle-irons are set with one of the sides in line with the radii of the wheels. Fig. IV is an enlarged detail view of the angle-irons set as shown in Fig. III. Fig. V is a similar enlarged detail view, but with the angle irons set as shown in Fig. II.
1 is aframe of any suitable construction, to which is attached the pole 2.
3 is the axle, journaled to the frame 1 and to which are secured the wheels 4. The periphery 5 of these wheels 4: is somewhat broad and fiat and furnished with perforations through which bolts 6 are adapted to pass.
7 are angle-irons of sufficient length to extend from one wheelto another and which are perforated both through the angles 8 thereof and the sides 9. It will be observed that when the bolts 6, passing through the periphery 5 of the wheels 4:, secure the said angle-irons 7 thereto by being passed through the holes 9 a straight sharp edge in line with the radii of the wheels 4 will be presented to the surface to be rolled or broken and that when the said bolts 6 are passed through the perforations of the wheels 4 and the holes 8 of the said angle-irons the apex of said angleirons is presented to the surface to be broken.
10 is the seat for the driver, secured to the frame 1, and 11 is a convenient foot-rest.
In Fig. I, I have shown the device constructed with two pairs of wheels, which, when the angle irons are bolted thereto, as described, make two independent cylinders for rolling the ground; but it is sometimes desirable that only one pair of wheels,-and consequently one cylinder, should be used, the essential feature of the invention being the construction of a cylindrical roller by means of angle-irons bolted to wheels, said angle-irons being capable of adjustment, so as to present either the apex or the straight edge thereof to the surface which it is desired to roll or pulverize.
Iclaim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- A land-roller comprising wheels having perforations, angle-iron bars having holes in the flanges and at the apex of the bars, bolts whereby the bars are secured to the wheels to provide a skeleton cylinder, an axle mounted in the wheels, and a frame mounted on the axle; substantially as described.
FRANZ SOIIONI-IOFF.
In presence of- CHAs. H. WOERMANN, ANTON WINSCHEL.
