BLOWING-FAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,571, dated August 23, 1898. Application filed August 27,1897. Serial No. 649,707. (No model.) Patented in Austria August 18,1896, Noam/3,222.

Be it known that I, J OHANN BRoLIcH, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Ips, in the Province of Lower Austria, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blowing-Fans, (patented in Austria August 18, 1896, No. 46/3,222,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to blowing-fans with a movable case for directing currents of heated or dry air over surfaces which have to be dried, and has for its object to provide means for distributing the air-current over a large surface varying the width of the dischargeopening, and, further, providing special bearin gs for the fan-shaft and fan-case. For this purpose I make the fan-case with trunnions which work in parts of the axle-bearings, and I pass the axle freely through these trunnions and journal them in the parts of the bearings beyond the trunnions. drive by a reducing gear at slow speed a crank or eccentric from which a rod extends to a pin on the fan-casing, so that when the fan revolves the casing is caused to oscillate to and fro on its axis, sending the air-cnrrent in various directions over a large surface. The pin to which the crank or eccentric rod is linked may be adjusted nearer to or farther from the axis, so that the extent of the oscillations of the casing may be made greater or less, as desired. By hinging one side of the discharge-mouth to the case and adjusting this side nearer to or farther from the fixed side the mouth can be narrowed or widened, as desired.
The improved fan is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view; and Fig. 2, an elevation, partlyin section. Fig. 3 shows in section, on an enlarged scale, the device for varying the width of the discharge-opening. Figs. 5 and 6 represent details of the trunnions and bearings.
As shown in the drawings, the fan a is provided with a surrounding case b. Further, there are trunnions or sockets'b b on the case reaching into the hollowed out portions d in the bearings 01, in which the shaft 0 rests.
From this fan-axle I The trunnions surround shaft 0, but have larger openings than the bearing d, so that the case is mounted loosely on the shaft and moves independently from the revolving fan.
.On the front side the case 19 carries a pin or bolt f, to which is linked a rod g. The second end of this rod is linked to a crankwheel h. N The wheel h is slowlyand continually rotated from the counter-shaft 0, Fig.1. By this rotation the rod 9 is given a reciprocating motion by which the case Z) is oscillated about the shaft 0. Owing to this oscillation the discharge-nozzle b? occupies diiferent positions, sending the air-current in various directions over a large surface. Hereby the whole air receives a whirling motion and the heat is uniformly distributed, so that a swift drying is effected.
The bolt' f may be preferably adjusted in a slot f of the case b in order to eifect greater or less oscillations of the case.
In order to be able to adjust at will the width of the mouth, the one side b of the mouth 17 is hinged at m, so that it may be placed nearer to or farther from the fixed side by means of linked screw-bolts p and nuts 19, counteracted by spring n.
For the purpose of diminishing the friction in the bearings of the case and of the shaft the trunnions or sockets b bof the case have a somewhat larger diameter than the shaft 0, so that the latter may freely pass.
The bearings dd have two openings orbores of a different diameter. The larger one, at, corresponds with the external diameter of the trunnions or sockets b b. The smaller one,- d corresponds with the diameter of the shaft c, so that friction between trunnion b b and shaft 0 is prevented, even when they turn in different directions.
It is obvious that these fans may be employed not only for drying-chambers, but also for other industries, and that the details of construction may be Widely varied without departing from the nature of this invention.
Having now described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A blowing-fan consisting of the fan a mounted on shaft 0 in bearings cl, an oscillating fan-case with mouth 11 and provided with trunnions b reaching into the hollowedout portions (1 of the bearings d and mounted loosely on shaft 0, a reducing-gear, a crank- Wheel 72 with a rod g which is linked to a bolt fin slot f on the case b so that upon revolving the fan the case oscillates, as specified.
2. In a blowing-fan an oscillating casing mounted loosely on the fan-shaft, a reducing gear in connection with the shaft and driving a crank-wheel with crank-rod which is linked to an adjustable bolt on the casing, substantially as specified.
