To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CORNELIUS REGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented new and useful I1nprovements in Mottling or Spotting Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention-relates to the mottling or enaineling of various articlesas, for example, granite or other ware; and the invention.

resides in the novel features set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawing, in which is shown an elevation, partly in section, of an apparatus for carrying out the invention.

In the drawing is shown a reservoir or receptacle 1, having a filling-opening 2. When the vessel 1 is suitably charged or filled with the desired enamel, powder, or material, the opening 2 is covered or closed. The vessel 1 might be described as a pressure-tank, since its contents can be subjected to pressure from the pressure-tube 3, leading into tank 1. From tank 1 the contents or liquid can pass through the outlet 4: to a spout or nozzle 5.

A pressure-tube 6 7 leads to a spout ornozzle 8. This blast or pressure spout 8 is shown surrounding or concentric to the tank-spout 5, so that the stream of enamel is surrounded by the blast from spout 8. The enamel or mottling composition coming from spout 5 being ejected or sprayed by the blast or pressure from spray-spout 8, such enamel will spot or mottle an object suitably held in the spray. Such an object, for example, as a granite or sheet-metal utensil or object when suitably dipped or moistened and exposed to the spray will have the sprayed enamel adhering in spots.

The spraying or mottling can be done on either the inside or outside or on any suitable part of a vessel or article. The mottles or spots being of suitable contrasting color as compared to the background or color of the article or of its main coat or enamel, such spots will produce a striking or pleasing effect.

In case the powder or contents of the tank 1 should be sufficiently diluted or liquid the pressure through tube 3 might be dispensed with 3 but in practice a suitable ejecting-pressure through tube 3 has been found serviceable.

In case the spout 5 should become clogged or stopped the same can be cleared by a pointer or stem 9. This clearing-stem is jointed or connected to lever 10, having its fulcrum 11 on a suitably-applied arm or support 12. The lever being suitably actuated, as by handle 13, the stem 9 is projected or forced out through the nozzle 5 or made to clear the latter. The spring 14 is applied to normally hold stem 9 retracted or clear of spout 5 to leave a free outlet for the enamel or. spraying material.

Mottling or enameling is of course familiar. The article is dipped in well-known enamel of suitable kind and color to give the background. The mottling-enamel, finely ground, as usual, being put in tank 1 and sprayed onto such dipped goods will effect mottling or spotting. The pressure in pipes 3 and 7 is elfected by a suitable pressure medium. In practice air forced through pipes 3 and 7 has been found economical and effective.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a mottling or spotting device, the combination with a pressure-tank, of a spout or nozzle connected therewith, a concentric pressure-spout disposed about said nozzle, a cleaning-stem arranged within said nozzle, means for projecting said stem through the discharge end of the nozzle, and a spring for normally holding said cleaning-stem retracted to permit the unobstructed discharge of the mottling material, substantially as described.

2. In a mottli'ng or spotting device, the combination with a pressure-tank, of a spout or nozzle connected therewith, a pressure-spout disposed concentrically about said nozzle, a cleaning-stem arranged within said nozzle and adapted to be projected through the discharge end thereof to clear the same, a lever for projecting the cleaning-stem, and a spring arranged to normally hold the cleaning-stem retracted to permit the unobstructed discharge of the mottling material, substantially as described.
