Description

N0.'609,l 8l. v Patented Aug. l6, I898.
E. anus". THILL COUPLING. I (Application filed June 26, 1897.)
(No Model.)
Invpnfor 1 STATES EGBERT BRUSH, OF SMITI'ITOWN, NEW YORK.
THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,181, dated August 16, 1898.
Application filed June 26, 1897.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LEGBERT BRUSH, of Smithtown Branch, in the county of Sufiolk and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement inThill-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement consists in the combination, with a metal strap or plate adapted to be fastened to any suitable part of a vehicle and having a block or hook extending transversely from it and a screw projecting beyond said block or hook, of a U-shaped coupling-piece pivotally connected to an appurtenance of thills and adapted to engage said block or hook, and a nut for holding the U-shaped coupling-piece in engagement with the said block or hook, a plate being preferably interposed between the nut and the top of the U- shaped coupling-piece.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of a thill-coupling embodying my improvement. Fig.2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of a U shaped coupling-piece and a portion of thills with which it is connected. Fig.4 is a detached perspective View of a metal strap or plate adapted to engage with the U-shaped coupling-piece. Fig. 5 is a detached perspective View of a plate. Fig. 6 is a perspective View of a nut.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all figures.
A designates a strap or plate, of metal, adapted to be secured by screws, bolts, or analogous devices to any suitable part of the running-gear of a vehicle. It is near its outer end provided with a transversely-extending block or hook a, and this in the present instance is shown as extending upwardly. The rear side a of the block or hook is inclined.
A screw B extends upwardly from the block or hook at. Preferably it will be made separately from the block or hook and the plate and will be made to extend up through both.
,C designates a U-shaped coupling-piece whose ends are perforated to receive a bolt D, passing through them and through a'hole in a metal strap or plate E, which is adapted to be fastened by screws or bolts to thills. The bolt D constitutes a pivotal connection between the U-shaped coupling-piece O and the strap or plate E. The U-shaped coup- Serial No. 642,413. (No model.)
ling-piece is of such a size and shape as to embrace the block or hook a, and preferably the front 0 of the transverse portion of the coupling-piece will be inclined similarly to the rear side a of the block or hook a.
F designates a plate adapted to extend across the U shaped coupling-piece above the block or hook to of the metal strap or plate A. It has a hole for the passage of the screw B and a tailpiece that extends down over the outer surface of the transverse portion of the coupling-piece O. This tailpiece prevents the plate from turning.
G designates a nut which is applied to the screw 13 outside of the plate F. It will be seen that by removing the nut G the plate F may be slipped off and the coupling-piece O detached from the strip or plate A. Thus thills may bereadily detached. They may be almost as readily replaced by slipping the coupling-piece C over the block or book a of the strap or plate A and reapplyin g the plate F and nut G. i
.The purpose of inclining the rear surface of the block or hook at and the opposite surface of the coupling-piece O is toovercome any tendency ofthe latter to lift off the block or hook, and thus to reduce the strain upon the plate F and nut G.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of a metal strip or plate, adapted to be fastened to any suitable part of a vehicle, and having a block or hook extending transversely from it, said block or hook having an inclined rear surface, and a U shaped coupling-piece pivotally connected to an appurtenance of thills, the couplingpiece having an inside inclined surface next to the inclined surface of' the block or hook, and being adapted to engage said block or hook, with means for holding the U-shaped coupling-piece in engagement with the said block or hook, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EGBERT BRUSH.
