LAM P-HOLDER FOR `|3|OYOLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,149, dated August 16, 1898.
Application iiled .T une 8, 1897. Serial No- $9,890. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, HANs FREIE-.ERR vON KETELHODT, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, andaresident of Ober Ehrenbreitstein, near Coblentz,in the Empire of Ger1nany,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Holders for Bicycles which also serve as watch-holders and map-carriers, of `which the followingris a full and clear specification.
My invention relates to a lamp-holder for bicycles so constructed and arranged that it serves at the same time as a watch-holder and a map-carrier, the use Or observation of all these being easy. This object is effected in the following manner, clearly illustrated -in the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all figures. i
Figure 1 is a side view of the lamp-holder. Fig. 2 is a front view. Figs. 3 and 4L are details. j
Referring to the drawings, A is the front tube of the frame of the bicycle, through which the spindle of the steering-fork passes. Z is the lamp-holder, xed on the front tube A in the general manner.
The lamp-holder is so constructed that the part projecting at right angles, or nearly so, which serves to carry the lamp, also receives and holds a vertical rod s, the upper part of which is provided with a map-holder. For this purpose a socket or guide for the said rod s is made in the lamp-holder, in which socket the rod can be moved up or down. To the upper end of the rod s is attached a plate jo, upon which the map is laid, the plate p f being connected to the rod s by a link Or hinge, so that it can be adjusted at a suitable angle. The rod s, with the map-holder, can also be adjusted tO any desired height and is made rectangular in section, so as to prevent it from turning around. To adj ust its height, the rod s may be provided with holes at different heights to receivea movable pin Or with helical grooves into which catches are pressed bysprings, so that its position can be exactly fixed by pulling it up or pressing it down, as desired, Fig. 2.
The plate p, which carries the map, should be of such size as to receive conveniently a folded road-map and is preferably made of light metal plate, such as aluminium, and has a turned-over edge and is furnished with a transparent cover c, which fits above and holds the map. This cover c, which may be of Celluloid, is hinged to the plate p and is held down upon the map by a fastening.
The Watch-holder consists of a case g to receive Vthe watch, the case being lined with padding or tted with a spring to prevent injury to the Watch, and it is provided With a hinged cover. This case g is carried upon the upper end of an arm z5, projecting diagonally back from the lamp-holder Z.
The construction Of the part of the lampholder which carries the adjustable bar for the map-holder may be varied. For instance, it may be made of a double spring-wire frame, Fig. 3, attached to the bicycle-frame, the lampsocket fitting upon this frame, in the center of which is formed a vertical square socket to receive the adjustable rod s, a bar from the lower end of the frame being turned up to carry the watch-holder. i Also the lamphOlderZ may be a solid vertical bar, Fig. 4, of
suitable section, upon which the lamp-socket fits, asquare hole or socketl for the adjustable rod s being formed down its center.
The lamp can at any time be fixed in its place, as the map-holder can be easily removed. 'Ihe latter can be folded together when not in use and (with the map) carried in the pocket.
When the map and the watch are both in use, the latter can be readily seen by lifting the plate carrying the inap.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1.' In combination, the lamp-holder, a rod s adj ustably carried `thereby and a map -holding plate connected to the upper end of the rod s, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the lamp-holder, an arm t extending therefrom and a case g' on saidarm to receive a watch, substantially as described.
3. In combination with the holder for the lamp, the rod s carried thereby, a plate lo pivotally connected to the said rod and a transparent cover c hinged to the plate p, substan-V HANS FREIHERR V. KETELHODT.
