NlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES JAMES HARVEY, OF KIDDERMINSTER, ENGLAND.
CARPET-SWEEPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IPatent No. 609,145, dated August 16, 1898.
Application filed December 24, 1897. Serial No. 668,386. (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES JAMES HAR- VEY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain,
residing at The Grove, Kidderminster, in the county of Worcester, England, have invented a certain new and useful Dust-Collector, of which the following is a specification.
According to this invention flaps of leather, india-rubber, or other suitable material are fixed radially to two parallel shafts which are driven in opposite directions, the flaps overlapping each other when they are in the same plane as the shafts. Preferably the shafts carry pairs of friction-rollers in contact with each other, one pair running on the ground and driving the other pair. One, or it might be both, sets of flaps act as brushes, sweeping the dirt into the space between the rollers and lifting it, the overlapping of the flaps preventing it from falling down again. Means may be provided for delivering the dirt so lifted into a receiver.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical'section of an apparatus constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan of the shafts the ground and the rollers I? run in contact with them.
c are flexible flaps fixed to the shafts a.
passing around them and also around another pair of rollers g. This arrangement allows the guards cl to be made higher, so that more dirt can be collected before it becomes necessary to empty the apparatus.
\Vhat I claim is. l
l. The combination of a pair of shafts, means for supporting them and causing them to rotate, flexible flaps connected to and moving with one shaft and adapted to move over and in contact with the surface to be cleaned, and flexible flaps connected to and moving with the other shaft and also adapted to move over and in contact with the surface to be cleaned.
2. The combination of the casing, horizontal shafts having bearings in the casing, a roller carried by one shaft and adapted to move over the surface to belcleaned, a roller carried by the other shaft out of contact with the surface to be cleaned, and driven by the first-mentioned shaft, flexible flaps on one roller and flexible flaps on the other roller
