FREDERICK J. BIIRRELL, OF TI-IETFORD, ENGLAND.
FURNl TURE-CASTER.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,137, dated August 16, 1898. Application filed ep ember 14, 1897. Serial No. 651,654. (No model.) Patented in England February 6, 1893, No. 2,569.
T0 to whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK JOHN BUR- RELL, a subject of the Queen of GreatBritain, and a resident of Thetford, in the county of Norfolk, Kingdom of England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furniture-Casters, (patented in Great Britain February 6, 1893, No. 2,569,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to furniture-casters, and has for its object the production of an article of that class which is similar to the ordinary caster in that it has a base attached to the article of furniture by means of the usual cup and a lower portion, carrying the roller, revolving upon the upper portion, but which possesses such modifications in construction as will render the same more efficient in operation, while being comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and simple in construction.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter set forth and described, and more particularly pointed outin the claim hereto appended.
The drawing is a sectional elevation of my invention.
Like letters refer to like parts.
In the drawing the top portion a of myimproved caster is provided with an upwardlyopening socket a and with a shoulder a formed by an annular projection on the base thereof, and a downwardly-directed flange 0. which extends from the outermost portion of said shoulder.
Moving within the flange a and within the annular shoulder a is a cap 6 which surmounts the lower portion 22, which supports the yoke 0, between the arms of which the roller D is mounted. This cap b is hollow on the lower side thereof and is provided with an outwardly-directed annular flange 19 which extends adjacent to the lower extremity of the flange o Seated between the cap and the annular flange a is a ring of ball-bearingsf, the shoulders a serving as an upper bearing therefor. The upper andthe lower part are united by means of a pivot g, which is provided with an extended head 9 between which and the interior of the cap are also seated ball-bearings, as h.
One ring of balls, as f, principally takes up the direct downward pressure in my improved caster, and the other ring, 71, takes the side strain resulting from the axis of the roller 0 being outside or away from the vertical axis of the caster or by any obstruction which tends to prevent the roller from traveling in the direction in which the upper portion of the caster a may be pushed or caused to move, such side strain becoming considerable when the weight upon the caster-causes the roller 62 to become embedded in the carpet or material over which the article of furniture is to be dragged.
It is evident from the above description that the cap 19 is adapted to readily revolve upon the ball-bearings inclosed between the annular flange upon its lower portion and the annular flange of the bottom portion. The pivot revolves with the cap I) upon the inner bearings between the flange thereof and bottom portion.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a caster, the combination with a top portion, a shoulder formed on the lower extremity thereof and a downwardly-directed annular flange projecting from the outer extremity of said shoulder of a bottom portion surmounted by a hollow cap adapted to pass between said shoulders, and an outwardly-directed annular flange at the base thereof, ball-bearings seated between said cap and said first-mentioned flange, andbetween said shoulder, and said last-named flange, of a pivot provided with an extended head adapted to be seated in said cap and ball-bearings seated between said head, and the interior of said cap and a roller supported by said lower portion, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of September, 1897.
FREDERICK J. BURRELL.
