the following description.
The improvement is susceptible of various 3 changes in the form, proportion, and the 1 minor details of construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of i the advantages thereof, and to a full disclol sure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in j the lever 17 is held in an adjusted position and Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of aa combined implement for bedding and culti- 1 Fig. 2 is a top plan view Fig. 3 is a rear view, parts being broken away. be replaced by others of different length, according to the purpose for which the implemately U form, and a foot-rest 8.
One of the principal objects is to provide for a varied adjustment of the gang of soili working devices to meet existing circumstances, character of soil, and nature of sur- 1 The implement is to be used. A U shaped frame 3 has Be it known that 1, MIDDLETON N. PARKER, j a citizen of the United States, residing atl Bolton, in the county of Bell and State of; Texas, have invented a new and useful Land Bcdder and Cultivator, of which the followthe rear ends of its side bars secured to the middle portion of the arch 1 and projects about at right angles to the plane of the said arch, so as normally to occupy an approximately horizontal position, and this frame is strengthened by a lateral brace 4 and an end stay 5. The pole or tongue 6 is secured to the horizontal portions of the arch, and frame 3 and is provided with a hanger 7, of approxi- The drivers seat 9 is secured to the arch about midway of its ends and to one side of the pole or tongue 6. A plate 10 is secured to a bent end of the arch 1, so as to form a vertical slot 11, in which operates the crank end 12 of a transversely-disposed rod or bar 13, so as to direct said crank in its vertical movements when adjusting the elevation of the rod or i bar at its movable end.
For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to 1 be had to the accompanying drawings and The rod or bar 13 has cranks at each end of similar formation and about of equal length,
the crank 12at the required elevation. An arm projects from the rod or bar 13, and links 21 connect its outer end with the lower end of a lever 22, fulcrumed to the opposite side bar of the frame 3, said lever being held in any desired position within the limits of 3 its movement by a hand-latch 23 and a notched Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in segment 2 1. By operating the lever 22 the rod or bar 13 is turned in its bearings 15 and 16, thereby changing the elevation of the horizontal or intermediate portion of the rod The frame comprises an arch 1, having spindles at its ends upon which aremounted the grou11dwl1eels 2, said spindles having de- 1 tachable connection with the arch, so asto 13 between its terminal cranks.
A gang 25 of soil-working devices is mounted upon the horizontal portion of the rod or bar 13 near the end having the crank 12 and is prevented from lateral movement by being confined between stops 26, having ad justablc connection with the rod or bar, whereby the gang may be shifted, but when moved to the required position is fixed by securing the stops to the rod or bar. The gang 25 is composed of a series of beams having their rear ends curved and bearing shovels, plowpoints, or soil-Working devices of desired pattern, according to the character of work to be performed. As shown, the gang is composed of a series of three beams, the middle beam having its rear end projecting'in the rear of the side beams and provided with a double plow-point, and the side beams being of unequal length and having a right and a left hand turning plow applied thereto, respectively, as illustrated. As shown, the implement is arranged for bedding; but for cultivating sweeps will be substituted for the plow-points shown, and if the ground-wheels are not spread sufficiently to straddle the rows one of the spindles will be replaced by another of greater length to attain the de sired end, whereby the soil between the rows may be loosened.
Plates 27 are secured to the opposite sides of the front end of the middle beam, and their front ends are provided with a series of transversely-alining openings. A brace 28 is secured at its rear end to the gang, and its front end has a transverse opening corresponding with the series of openings in the plates 27, so as to be turned upon its pivotal connection with the gang to bring the opening in its front end in registry with any one of the openings in the plates 27 to accommodate a transverse pin 29, by means of which a clevis 30 has adjustable connection with the plates 27. A link 31 is adjustable along the clevis 30 to vary the point of attachment therewith of the draft. The front end of the gang passes between the side members of the hanger 7 and is supported by a pin or bolt 32, having adjustable connection with the said hanger by passing through one of a number of openings formed therein.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimedas new is 1. In an agricultural implement, the combination of a frame mounted upon groundwheels, a rod having cranks at its ends journaled to the frame independently of the groundwvheels, one of the bearings for a crank being fixed and the other bearing movable vertically, a gang of soil-working devices mounted upon the horizontal portion of the rod intermediate of the crank, means for turning said rod upon its cranks to raise or lower the plow-points, and independent means for vertically adjusting the said movable bearing to change the relative pitch of the plow-points, substantially as set forth.
2. In an agricultural implement, the combination of a frame having pendent portions provided with fixed spindles upon which are mounted ground-wheels, a rod having cranks at its ends obtaining bearings in the pendent portions of the frame, one of the bearings being relatively fixed and the other movable vertically, a gang of soil-working devices mounted upon the horizontal portion of the rod intermediate of the cranks, means for turning the rod upon its cranks to raise and lower the plow-points, and means for raising and lowering the said movable bearing, substantially as set forth.
3. In an agricultural implement, the combination with the frame comprising an arch having one of its vertical members formed with a vertical slot, and ground-wheels mounted upon spindles applied to the end portions of the arch, of a rod having cranks at its ends journaled to the pendent ends of the aforesaid arch, one of the cranks having its arm extending through the aforedescribed vertical slot, and the other crank having its hearing relatively fixed, means for raising and lowering the bearing of the crank in the vertical slot and holding it in an adjusted position, and a gang of soil-working devices, mounted upon the horizontal portion of the rod intermediate of the cranks and adapted to be turned so as to raise and lower the shovels, substantially as set forth.
4. In an agricultural implement, the combination with the frame comprising an arch having a vertical guide at one end and a relatively fixed hearing at the opposite end, a hanger at the front end of the frame, groundwheels mounted upon spindles applied to the end portions of the arch, a rod having crankterminals, one of the cranks being journaled in the said fixed bearing and the other crank passing through and operating in the vertical guide, means for raising and lowering the adjustable crank-terminal and holding it in an adjusted position, means for turning the rod upon its crank-terminals, a gang of soil-Working devices mounted upon the said rod inter mediate of its crank-terminals and having its front portion passing between the vertical members of the hanger, and a rod having adjustable connection with the members of the aforedescribed hanger and forming a support for the forward end of the aforesaid gang, substantially as set forth.
5. In combination, an arched frame provided at its ends with spindles bearing groundwheels and having avertical slot at one end, forminga guide, an approximately U-shaped frame extending horizontally from the arched frame, a pole or tongue secured to the horizontal portions of the said frames, a hanger applied to the pole and provided with a vertically-adjustable pin or bolt, a rod or bar having crank-terminals, the one operating in the aforesaid guide and the other journaled in a hearing at the opposite end of the arched frame, a lever having a link receiving the said crank operating in the vertical guide, a second lever having connection with the rod or bar for turning it in its bearings, means for holding the two lovers in an adjusted position, and a gang of soil-Working devices In testimony that I claim the foregoing as mounted upon the intermediate portion of my own I have hereto affixed mysig'nature in ID the rod or bar and having its front end snpthe presence of two Witnesses.
