Warren States Patent Urethra,
PIERRE BOIMARE, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
FU RNAC E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,826, dated August 9, 1898.
Application filed November 24, 1896. Serial No. 613,250.
(No model.) Patented in France September 18, 1895, No. 250,627;
in England Decemb 11,1895,No. 23,778; in Belgium December 11, 1895, No. 118,816, and in Germany November 29,
To Ml whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PIERRE BOIMARE, captain of a merchant vessel navigating the high seas, of 81 Rue de Provence, Paris, in the Republic of France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Connection with Furnaces, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent of France for fifteen years, dated September 18, 1895, No. 250,627, and which was patented to my assignees, Kahn, Viollet 82: Fox, in Great Britain December 11, 1895, No. 23,778; in Belgium December 11, 1895, No. 118,816, and in Germany November 29, 1896, No. 94,442,) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being made to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in connection with furnaces, and has for its objcct to provide for a more perfect consumption of smoke than heretofore, the said improvements being applicable for use with every variety of furnace.
The principle of my invention consists, essentially, in heating the fuel for preliminary distillation of the carbon before its introduction onto the grate. The chamber wherein the preliminary distillation of the carbon takes place is provided within the wall of the furnace, and the fire-box abovethe grate is wholly unobstructed.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, a vertical section of a glass-furnace having my invention embodied therein.
According to my invention the passage through which the fuel is passed opens into a chamber b Within the wall of the furnace, the said chamber being on a plane above that of the grate and to one side of the firebox above the grate, the said chamber being provided with a horizontal bottom to retain the fuel until it is in condition to be forced onto the grate. In front of the chamber Z) the said passage is divided into two parts by a horizontal partition 0. The space underneath above the partition 0 serves for the introduction of the fuel into the chamber 1). The fuel is fed into the chamber 1), where it is subjected to a gradual increase of temperature by reason of its contact with the hot gases of the grate and with the walls of the furnace. Distillation takes place, gases be ing given off and burned on their passage over the grate. At the end of a certain interval of time (which is variable, but may be easily determined experimentally once and for all for each kind of furnace and for all kinds of fuel) the fuel deprived in this manner of gas is raked or pushed onto the bars 9 of the grate. A stoking-iron is introduced, when required, into the space an under the partition 0, so as to lift and stir up the fuel during its heating in the chamber 1) for the purpose of permitting the heat to be easily distributed throughout the whole mass and of allowing the gases generated to escape with greater facility.
I am aware that it has heretofore been pro posed to heat coal in a chamber before passing it into the fire-box and that furnaces for this purpose have been described heretofore; but such descriptions have not disclosed the special features of improvement herein set forth and claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a furnace the combination, with a grate and fire-box above the grate, of afuel-distillation chamber 1) in the wall of the furnace wholly above and at one side of the grate the bottom of said chamber being horizontal so that coal will rest thereon without falling into the combustion-chamber, and there being an unobstructed opening between chamber b and the combustion-chamber, whereby fuel can be pushed horizontally into the combustion chamber.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
PIERRE BOIMARE.
