SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,794, dated August 9, 1898. Application filed uly 19, 1897. Serial No. 645,154. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

130 it known that I, JEREMIAH FnANcIs QUINN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical. Toys, of which the followingis a specificationl My invention relates to improvements in holiday toys; and its object is to provide an Easter toy in the form of an egg, with which a chicken may be made to hatch at the tie sired time 011 Easter morning.

I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of an egg, showing the dividing-line Where the shell is to separate when it is desired that the chicken appears to hatch and em erge therefrom. Fig. 2 is the same with the smaller end of the egg-shell removed and the chickens head projecting out of the shell and a representation of a gas-jet to illustrate how the parts are separated to allow the ohickens head to project, as in the act of hatching; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of an artificial egg-shell, showing the mechanism for forcing the chickens head out of the shell.

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

In the construction of this toy I make an egg-shell A of papier-mach or other suitable material, one end of which, as A, is disconnected, as at a, so that the two sections may be made to adhere by the use of an easily melted material, as wax, gum, or the resins, so that a low degree of additional heat, as a gas-jet D burning mildly under an artificial nest, as B, will cause the smaller end to become disconnected and fall away from the larger, so that the chickens head may be forced out, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3.

My mechanism for forcing the head 0 of the chicken out of the shell consists of an ordinary spiral spring E, applied in the usual manner of applying such springs in toys of this class, except that I sometimes place a flexible case 6 around it to prevent it from bending out of shape when compressed to admit the head 0 wholly within the egg when the two sections are united. The head of the chicken should be made of some material having a proper appearance to closely resemble a newly-hatched chicken, and to pre vent it from projecting too far out of the shell I usually attach a flexible sack or body F, so attached in the shell as to hold and conduct the chicken as desired.

VVh on my toy is in form, it resembles a plain egg, as in Fig. 1, with the broken edges a cemented together, as hereinbefore stated,whcn it is placed in a proper representation of a nest, (shown in Fig. 2 as a saucer 13,) when a slight heat below the nest will cause the ocinent to soften sufliciently so that the spring E will force the small end off and the head and shoulders of the chicken 0 out, as in Figs. 2 and 3.

Having thus fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

In a mechanical toy, an artificial shell divided to open for the egress of an artificial head, the parts secured together by an easilymelted cement, an artificial chickens head within the shell, a spring for actuating said head to force it out of the shell, shields for regulating the action of the spring and head, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2." In a mechanical toy, an artificial shell broken apart to allow of the protrusion of an image, the broken portions of the shell secured together by an easily-melted cement, an image within the shell, a spring for actuating the image to force it against and out of the broken portion of the shell, a shield around said spring, a second shield secured at one end to the image and at the other end to the shell, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
