GEORG FRIEDRICH LEBIODA, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,780, dated August 9, 1898.
Application filed December 29, 1897. Serial No. 664,336. (No model.) Patented in France November 14, 1896, No. 261,304, and in Belgium July 8,1897,1 T0. 129,365.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Gnone FRIEDRICH Ln- BIODA, a subject of the King of Prussia, Emperor of Germany, residing at the city of Paris, in the Republic of France, have made a new and useful invention in Improvements in Apparatus for Drying and Hardening Wood, of which the following is a specification, this invention having been patented in France, No. 261,304, dated November 14, 1896, and in Belgium, No. 129,365, dated July 8, 1897.
This invention relates to an apparatus for drying and hardening all kinds of wood, whether the Wood be in the bark or out into poles, disks, planks, boards, spars, parquetry- The drying and hardening may take place either with wood in a natural state or with dyed or impregnated or dyed and impregnated wood.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of the apparatus,
' partially in section; Fig. 2, an end View of the same.
The pieces of Wood a which are to be treated are separated by metal plates 1) from one another and lie on a press-table c, heated by means of a steam-coil. The plates 6, which rest on friction-rollers, can be adjusted on the press-table. These plates 6 are heated by a steam-coil g and are connected with one another by means of screw-spindles IL in such a way that they may be approached or separated as soon as the gearingrlis operated by means of hand-wheels j. A horizontal plate It, also heated by the steam-coil Z, is attached to two pistons m, which are adjustable in hydraulic cylinders n. Between these latter a hydraulic apparatus 0 is arranged, by means of which the plates may be raised on the return of the pistons. The horizontal cylinders are carried by columns 1).
The mode of working of the apparatus hereinbefore described is as follows: After one or more pieces of wood have been placed on the press-table c the plates care allowed to descend on the ends 01": the wood, a hand-Wheel j being rotated until the wood is screwed quite tight. Metal rules (1 are then laid on the upper side of the wood, according as the wood is of larger or smaller width than the plate 70. The plate 7.; is then caused to descend under the action of the hydraulic cylinders in order to exert a pressure on the Woodpile. The taps of the heating-coils cl g Zare opened, and steam flows into the press-table c and the plates 6 and is. From time to time the plates are adjusted closer in order to gradually increase the pressure on the wood treated. After treatment of a pile of wood has been completed the steam-taps are shut off, the hydraulic pistons are caused to rise, and the vertical plates are separated. The treated wood is then removed and replaced by a fresh supply, which is again treated in the manner hereinbefore described.
Instead of employing plates heated by steam-coils plates heated electrically or in other suitable manner may of course be employed.
Having now particularly described and as-= certained the nature of my said invention and in what manner thesame is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- In apparatus for drying and hardening wood the combination of a heated press-table, plates resting on said table and mutually adjustable by means of gearing, screwspindle and hand-wheels, and an upper pressplate connected with metallic pistons, which exert a strong pressure on the wood substantially as hereinbefore described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
GEORG FRIEDRICH LEBIODA.
W'itnesses:
PAUL Horrmcrrrnn, AUGUST Gns'r.
