IMPLEMENT FOR CARRYING WHEELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,479, dated August 2, 1898. Application filed October 15, 1897. Serial No. 655,268, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. RHODES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Oovington, in the county of Fountain and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Implements for Oarryin g Wheels 5 and'I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the vaccompanying-drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new an useful improvements in implements for lifting wheels of vehicles, the object of my invention being to provide acheap, simple, and effective implement for lifting vehicle-wheels, so that they may be handled with the tires thereon and placed into a tank for the purpose of cooling and tempering the tire while on the folly of the wheel.
The invention consists in the combination of a pair of connected bars which are held in sliding engagement with each other by means of loops attached to the end of each bar so as to embrace the bar adjacent thereto, the bars also being provided with depending hooks made of flat pieces each having a quarter-turn adjacent to the bars to which they are attached, they also being provided at their ends with upwardly-projecting portions, the ends of which are beveled, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings,which illus trate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wheel carrier or lifter constructedin accordance with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 a detail perspective view, of one of the hooks detached.
A A refer to two frames, each being made up of parallel bars b b, which are connected to each other by cross bars 6, beyond which are located the handles 0. The ends of each of the bars I) have rigidly attached thereto engagement with each other they will prevent the frames being separated.
To the frames A A, which are adjustable longitudinally upon each other by means of the connections hereinbefore described,,are attached hooks E, preferably made up of flat bars of metal having at their upper ends an opening .2, through which passes a bolt or screw for attaching the'same to the bars I),
said bars being recessed to receive the upper end of the hook. Below the point of attachment of the hooks with the bars I), the hooks are given a quarter-turn, as shown at c, and the lower end'of the depending member of said hooks is bent to provide a horizontal ortion (2 havin an n Wardl roectin p 9 b 0 rim or felly, and thewheel may be carried and placed in a tank containing water, so as shrink and temper the tire. The wheel being held securely by the carrier can be tilted or manipulated in any manner desired.

In an implement for lifting wheels, the combination of a pair of bars each pair of bars being transversely connected by a cross-bar and in sliding engagement with the bars of the adjacent frame by means of loops d, of hooks rigidly secured to the bars, the upper portion thereof having bends e the lower portions of the hooks being bent horizontally as shown at e and thence upwardly to provide a vertical member 6 the end portion of which is beveled, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
