PUNCTURE-BAND FOR PNEUMATIC TIRES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,166, dated August 2, 1898.
Application filed August 28, 1897.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,JOHN V. ALLEN,of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puncture :Bands for Pneumatic Tires, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to elastic bands and means to temporarily secure such bands upon a pneumatic tire, so as to close a puncture made therein.
It is the object of my invention to provide a device of simple and efficient construction which may be readily applied andremoved and when not in use may be compactly disposed for transportation.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of an ordinary bicycle-wheel, showing a convenient embodiment of my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the form of mydevice shown in Fig. 1, the same being detached from the wheel. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of said device, showing the clips interlocked. Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views showing modified forms of clips.
In said figures, A is the tire, B the wheelrim, and O the spokes secured in said rim.
Referring to the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, Dis an endless band consisting of a convenient length of soft-rubber tubing. In operation said out length of tubing is stretched double around the tire and rim in the position indicated in Fig. 1, so as to seal the puncture a. The aforesaid stretching action is conveniently effected by means of clips E E. Said clips comprise straight body portions e e, having shanks e a bent at right angles with said body portions, the extremities of said shanks being provided with hooks e e, adapted for .interengagement. The hooks e uponthe clip E extend at right angles with the plane of its body and shanks, being thus adapted to engage with the hooks 6 upon the other clip, which are bent in the same plane with their shanks and body. In said figures I have shown the clips E E as dissimilar in form. It
is, however, obvious that they may be made Serial No. 649,799. (No model.)
precisely alike, as indicated in Fig. 4, the hooks 6 being so related to the plane of the shanks that two of said clips maybe engaged in the manner shown.
It is obvious that the aforesaid clips may be stamped from sheet metal, as indicated at E in Fig. 5 butI prefer to form them ofcylindrical wire, as indicated in the other figures'of the drawings.
I prefer to make the body portion of the aforesaid clips straight, but do not desire to limit myself to such a shape, as it is obvious that they may be bent as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4 or 'otherwis'e'shaped to adapt them for particular embodiments.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a flexible band with a buckle and thus adapt it for engagement around a puncture in a pneumatic tire. broadly claim such a construction. I do not, however, desire to limit myself to the precise embodiment of my invention which I have shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim-- I thereforedo not desire to 1. In a puncture-band, an endless web of elastic material forming a two-ply band, and two clips mounted in the respective end bights of said band, substantially as set forth.
2. In a puncture-band, an endless web of elastic material forming a two-ply band, and two detachable clips adapted for insertion in the respective end bights .of said band, substantially as set forth.
3. In a puncture-band, an endless web of elastic material forming a two-ply band, two detachable clips adapted for insertion in the respective end bights of said band, and members upon the respective clips adapted for interengagement, substantially as set forth.
4:. In a puncture-band, an endless web of elastic material forming a two-ply band, and two identical clips mounted in the respective end bights of said band, and adapted for in--
