BENJAMIN P. COBB, O1 BOZEMAN, MONTANA.
MEAT-HOLDING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 607,680, dated July 19, 1898.
Application filed $eptember 13, 1897. Serial No. 651,438. (Nomodeh) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN P. COBB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bozenian, in the county of Gallatin and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Meat-Holding Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to clamps which are pivotally connected with butchers blocks, tas bles, or meat-boxes for the purpose of securely holding a piece of meat while being cut or sawed and is intended as an improvement upon the invention disclosed in Letters Patent granted to me December 27, 1892, No. 488,870.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of clamp whereby I secure important advantages with respect to simplicity and efficiency.-
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinaftor fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a meat-box provided with my improved clamp and showing the manner of using the same. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view looking from the under side of the clamp, detached, also showing the plate adapted to be secured to the box with which the clamp is connected.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a meat-box provided with legs 2 and a hinged door 3. Secured to the top of the box near one end is a circular plate 4, provided with an upwardly-projecting pin 5, having an elongated head 6. Pivotally engaging with this pin is a stirrup 7, comprising a horizontal portion having an elongated opening, through which the said head passes, and two opposite vertical arms.
The numeral 8 designates the clamp, consisting of a spring-metal bar, either rectangular or cylindrical, having the ends formed into or provided with loops 9 and 10. One of these loops 9 is pivoted to the upper ends of the stirrup by means of a pivot or bolt 12. To the other loop is pivoted a bracket 13, provided with one or more hooks 14, adapted to engage with a staple 15, secured to the legs of the box at one side. I prefer to use two of these hooks, one of which is of a different length than the other, so as to accommodate the clamp to varying sizes of meat.
The numeral 16 designates a slide through which the clamp passes, provided on its under side with pins 17 to engage with and hold the meat.
The operation will'be readily understood. The clamp is attached to the box by engaging the headed pin 5 with the slot in the stirrup and is then turned one-quarter around. By this means the stirrup can freely rotate on the pin, but cannot be disengaged therefrom until turned back until the elongated head 6 Will coincide with the elongated opening in the stirrup. The meat to be cut or sawedis then placed on the box and the clamp brought down, so that the pins of the slide will engage with the meat. One of the hooks 14 is then engaged with the staple 15 and the meat securely held in place on the box, so that both hands may be used in cutting and sawing the same.
WVhile I have shown and described the invention as being applied to a meat-box, it is obvious that it maybe used with a butchers block, a table, or other support.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a device for holding meat, the combination with'the box or other support, the plate secured thereto provided with a pin having an elongated head, the stirrup comprising the horizontal portion through which said pin passes, and two vertical arms and the pivot at the upper end of the stirrup, of the clamp connected with said pivot, the slide provided with pins, the bracket pivoted to said clamp provided with a hook, and the staple, substantially as described.
2. In a device for holding meat, the combination with a box or other support, the plate secured thereto, provided with a pin having an elongated head, the stirrup comprising the horizontal portion having an elongated opening through which said pin passes, and two vertical arms, the pivot at the upper end of said stirrup, the clamp connected therewith and the slide provided With pins, of the bracket pivoted to the other end of said clamp, the hooks of different lengths formed therewith, and the staple, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
BENJAMIN P. COBB. Witnesses:
S. L. BIERs'roRFF, CHAS. BAGG.
