vvro-ALL wHoM rr MAY coNcERN: i Be it known that I, GILBERT D. JONES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have ipvcntcd a new and improved Grinding-Mill; .and I dop'hereby declare that the rollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part oii this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of my invention, taken in the line a: x, iig. 2.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same, taken inthe line yy, ig.,1.
Figure 3 is aplan or top view of the bed and Scrapers pertainingto the same.

This invention relates to a new and improved 'grinding-mill, of the kind commonly termed the Chilian.
mill," and it consists in having .the peripheries of the wheels or rollers of V form, and the bed on which the wheelsor rollers work provided with an annular V groove, for the peripheries of' the wheels or rollers to work or run in.
The invention also. consists in the employment or use of Scrapers, applied to the machine in such a manner that, by a very simple adjustment,'the material to` be ground may be kept within thev path of the wheels or rollers, and when sufficiently ground, discharged from the bed-plate. l
By having the peripheries of the wheels or rollers of V form, and working in a corresponding shaped groove in the bed-piece, a cutting or grinding action is obtained, which renders the mill far more eiiicient in its operation than the original mill of the class specified; and the substance, while being ground, is also kept more within thc path of the wheels or rollers.
A. represents the bed of the mill, constructed of stone or metal, and having an annular groove, a,-'made in its upper surface, of V form in its transverse section, as shown clearly in figs. 1 and 2. B is a rectangular framing, which rests on the bed, A, and C is avertical shaft, fitted centrally therein, the lower end of saidv shaft being stepped centrally in the bed, A, as shown at b in iig. 1. This shaft, C, is formed or provided with a vertical oblong loop or opening, c,-through which a horizontal shaft, D, passes,`and E Erare .two wheels or rollers, placed loosely on said shaft, and retained thereon by hubs, d, on the ends of the same. The wheels or rollers,E E, may beconstructed of stone or iron, and 'their peripheries are of V form, corrcspondingto the shape of the annular groove, a, in the bed, A, in which groove the wheels or rollers lrotate or work, as will bc understood by referring to iig. 1. On the shaft, C, below the loop or opening, c, there is keyed a horizontal bar, F, the ends of which are'composed of two prongs orparms, d d', as shown clearly in fig. 3. In one of these prongs or arms, d, at each end of said bar, there is inserted a vertical arbor, e, and to the lower ends of these arbors curved scrapers, G, are attached, which, as Athe wheels or rollers, E E, travel around in the groove,a,
scrape or throw the substance being ground into the groove a. The other prongs or, arms have vertical arbors,
H, passing through them, which arbors, H, extend up through arms, I, on the shaft, 0,'and are connected to th'e out'er ends of levers, J, on the arms I, the inner ends oi' said levers being connected by pivots to `a-sliding sleeve, K, on the shaft C, which sleeve is raised and lowered by a lever, L. Only one arbor, H, is shown in' the drawings; but as both are alike, and arranged und operated in precisely vthe same manner, the representation of one only is deemed suihcient. To the lower ends of the arbors, H curved Scrapers, M, are attached, which, when lowered or brought down in contact with the bed, A, have a tendency to scrape or throw o'il` the ground substance from the bed, A.. l When said scrapcrsare raised, they are designed to be above the substance being ground, so that they cannot act upon it.' These Scrapers, M, it will be understood, arc raised and lowered by actuating the lever, L. y
The operation is as vfollows: The shaft, C, is rotated,'by the application of power to its upper end, and the Scrapers, M, are elevated, and the substance to be ground placed in the annillar groove, a, in the bed, A. The
wheels or rollers, E E, operate with a cutting and crushing action, the crushing action being due to the weight' or gravity of the wheelslor rollers, and the cutting action due to the sharp edge or angle, a*, formed by the two inclined surfaces of theperipheries of the Wheels or rollersworking in the V-shaped annular groove, a, the edge or an le, a*, as the wheels or rollers, E, pass' around in the groove, a, yin the path of aI circle, working laterally over the corresponding angle, 6*, formed by the two inclined surfaces of the groove, a. The/Scrapers,
2 eojaa G, throw the substance being ground into the groove, a, preventing it from escaping from the bed, A, and when the substance is sufciently ground, the Scrapers, M, are lowered, and said kSemper-s throw the ground Substance from thebed, the Scrapers, M, when down, Working in the groove, a, and extending out to the odge of the bed, A, as Shown clearly in iig. 2. I y l Having v'thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-h The adjustable or rising and fgnilng scrpers, M, and the' fixed Scrapers, Gr, arranged and applied to operate substantially in the manner as and for the prpose Sct forth.
G. D. JONES.
