Be it known that I, ELISHA SEYMOUR, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rotating Out-OE Valves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to rotating cut-oft valves for steam-engines.
The object of my invention is to provide a rotating cut-off valve of a simple, efficient, and durable construction, by means of which the time of cut off of steam to the enginecylinder maybe regulated according to the load upon the engine from time to time. I
lVith this object in view my invention consists in the combination of a rotating valve and a rotatable expansion-ring provided with a pair of segmental slots, openings, or ports as required, and thus govern the time and quantity of steam admitted to the cylinder, while the port of the rotatingvalve is over and passing the segmental slot in the expansion-ring.
My invention also consists in the novel devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described, and
specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a central sectional vie .of a rotating cut-oil valve embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view with the top plate of the valvecase removed. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a detail section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
In the drawings I have for convenience illustrated my invention in the form designed for use on a reciprocating en ginel It is, however, equally adapted for use upon rotary engines by simply suitably changing the location and number of the ports.- I
In the drawings, A represents a portion of an engine-cylinder of any suitable construction known to those skilled in the art.

. an exhaust-port through which the steam may escape from the valve-casin g through the eX- haust-port b Beneath the rotating valve D is a rotatable or adjustable expansion-ring F, provided with a pair of segmental slots or ports f f, each preferably in length about one-fourth the circumference, through one of which the live steam passes on its Way to the engine-cylinder while the exhaust escapes through the other. The base-plate B of the valve-casing is provided with a pair of stops b projecting from the upper face of the base-plate into and fitting the segmental slots 0r ports ff in the expansion-ring F, so that by turning the expansion-ring on its axis these stops will serve to vary or regulate the operative length of the segmental slots or ports f f, and thus vary the quantity of steam admitted to the cylinder at each stroke and also the time of its admission, as the shorter the segmental slot or port f in the expansion-ring the'quicker will the port I) in the rotating cut-off Valve D be in passing. sion-ring F in the direction to lengthen the operative length of the slots or ports f in the expansion-ring F the longer will the port d in the valve D be in passing the segmental slot or port f and the greater will be the quantity of steam admitted to the cylinder and the less will be the number of expansions of the steam in the engine-cylinder. NVhen the load upon the engine is light, by simply turning the expansion-ring in the direction to shorten the operative length of the ports Byturning the rotatable eXpanor slots fthe quicker will the port d be in passing and the greater will be the relative proportion of time during each rotation of the valve D when the live steam is cut off from the engine-cylinder and the greater will consequently be the number of expansions.
The rotating valve D or its shaft D may be continuously rotated by any suitable mech anism. As illustrated in the drawings, I have provided the valve-shaft D with a gear D which is a convenient means for giving a positive rotary motion to the valve.
The rotatable or adjustable expansion-ring F may be rotated or adjusted from time to time, as required, byany suitable mechanism. As illustrated in the drawings, 1 have shown, as a convenient means for rotating or oscillating the expansion-ring in either direction, as required, a segment-gearf, which meshes with a gear on a shaft P, which may be provided .with a lever or other mechanism for turning it by hand or by connection with the governor of the engine.
I claim- 1. .A rotating cut-off valve for steam-engines, comprising in combination a valve-casing having a base or bottom plate, a rotating valve in said case provided with ports, an expansion-ring beneath said valve provided with segmental slots or ports, said base or bottom plate of the casing having stops projecting into and fitting said segmental slots or ports in said expansion-ring so that the operative length of said segmental slots or ports may be adjusted or regulated as required by turning or oscillating the expansion-ring, and the time and the amount of steam admitted and number of expansions governed from time to time as may be required, substantially as specified.
2. In a rotating cut-off valve, the combination with a casing having bottom plate 13 provided with stops b 73 an oscillating expansion-ring F provided with segmental slots or ports f f, and a rotating valve D provided with ports cl cl, mechanism for rotating said valve D, and means for turning or oscillating said expansion-ring, substantially as specified.
3. The combination with a valve-case, of a rotating valve D therein, an expansion-ring F provided with segmental slots or ports ff, and stationary stops b b fitting in said segmental slots or ports f f, substantially as specified.
