SWITCH-OPERATING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,499, dated June 28, 1898. Application filed lleceinher 14, 1897- Serial No. 661,834. (No model.)

Be it known that I, GEORGE BRINKER BAR- RON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Easton, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switch-Operating Devices, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention is an improvement over the devices made the subject of LettersPat'ent granted me 011 the 2d of February, 1897, No. 576,424; and it is the object of the invention to simplify the construction and make it more effective.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a plan view of the switch-tongue and its operating mechanism, while Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 shows the means carried by the car for actuating the devices controlling the switch-tongue; and Figs. 4, 5,. 6, 7, and 8 are details of this construction.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the switchtongue is shown at a and is shifted by the positively-actuated pusher b. The inner end of the pusher b, which'is horizontal, is connected to the forked end of a horizontal pivoted bell-crank c, and the end of the bell-crank is connected to a link d, which in turn, at its opposite end, is connected to an upright e, forming a part of a sleeve f. The sleeve f has a projection g, which, with the upright e, practically forms a bell-crank, and this projection is connected by link h with a Weighted lever '5, pivoted at 7c and having its opposite end extending upwardly in contact with the bottom of a pivoted lever or cover plate 1, having a raised surface m, with its ends inclined to the surface of the boxing inclosing the parts. It will be seen that on the depression of the pivoted cover 1 the upper end of the lever 71 will be depressed, the lower end raised, the sleeve f rocked, and through the connections described the pusher b will be moved laterally to shift the tongue As soon as the pressure upon the pivoted cover 1 has been removed the weight of the lever '6 will return the parts to their normal position. In order to depress the lever or cover 1, I provide means carried by the car and-under the control of the driver or motorman. As shown in Fig. 4 and the following, the pilot-board A has secured to it a flanged plate a, and fitting the flanges of this plate, so as to be guided thereby, is a movable frame 13. This plate has brackets 2 projecting from its lower end at each side, and these brackets carrythe roller 0, and this roller is adapted to be raised or lowered and when lowered ,is used to depress the lever or cover 1, and; thus operate the switch-tohgueL- Itw'ill be observed that when this roller is lowered it is necessary to lock it in place, or else the rigidity of the devices used to throw the switch tongue maybe sufficient to overcome the weight of the roller, and thus raise. the roller instead' of having the roller operate the pivoted cover 1 to depress the same. To this end I use a lever c of bell-crank shape and pivoted to the frame B at 3. One end of this lever is upright and the other is horizontal. Then the frame 13 with its roller is-in the lowest position, the upright end of the leverc' slips under a projection 4, carried in the center of the plate a, as shown in Fig. 3, and this holds the roller down to its Work. The roller is lifted by means hereinafter described; but the first action must release the end of the lever c from the projection or stop 4. This is accomplished by forming a ring or eye 5 on the horizontal end of the lever e, and a rod 6 extends fromthis eye to operating means, so that the first action in the lifting of the rod 6 is to swing the vertical end of the lever c" out-from under the stop, and then the roller is free to be raised. The horizontal end of the'bell-crank has a projection 7, which works in a slot. 8 in the movable frame B, and this allowssufficient movement to free the lever e from the stop 4, after which in the continued upward movement of the rod 6 the frameB is also lifted with its roller. The frame B is provided with a cutout por tion 9, so as to prevent engagementbetween the frame B and the stop 4.
The rod 6 is connected at one end of the bellcrank 10, pivoted under the car, and from the opposite end of the bell-crank extends a rod 11, connecting with the end of a lever 12, pivoted at 13 and having a projection 14 extending into the groove of a snail-cam 15, the cam being operated by an ordinary hand-lever fitting its squared socket 16.
' What I claim is- 1. The combination with a switch-tongue, a pusher therefor disconnected from the same, a pivoted lever projecting above the surface and operating connections between the pivoted lever and the pusher including a weighted lever for transmitting the depression of the projecting lever to the switch-tongue, the Weighted lever returning both the pusher and the projecting lever to normal position, substantially as described.

In combination with a switch-tongue and means for operating it, a roller carried by the car vertically movable thereof, a stop and a lever movable with the roller and independently of the same adapted to engage said stop and means for releasing the lever and lifting the roller, substantially as described.
5. In combination with the pilot-board of a car, a movable frame B, a roller carried thereby,a bell-crank lever also carried by the frame, a stop engaging one end of the lever, a rod 6 engaging the other end, said lever having limited movement and operating connections to the position of the driver or motorman, substantially as described.
