TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:`
.Be it-known that LG. G. TOWNSEND, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, and 'State of New' York, have invented anew and useful Peg Float, for removing the pegs from the inside of boots and shoes and Ido hereby declare that the following is-a full, clear, and-exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of 'this specification, in whichv I l Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention, the iioat head :or stock, H, and the iioat, F, being shown in section.
Figure 2 is a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding ,parts in both iigures.
The nature of this invention consists in providing-a detachable cutting face, or ioat proper, and in the manner of attaching the'same to the head of the instrument; and also in making the saidhead self-locking in the desired position. l
To enable others to makeand use my invention, I will-describe its construction and operation.
I make the stock, A,'as shown in the drawings, with a square shank, B, to be inserted in any suitable standard, and a mortise or recess lin the side to receive the spring-locking latch, C. .p The stock A is forked at the top,.in which the wing, w, of .the adjustable head, H, is pivoted. lThis Wing, 1.o, is provided with several notches or holes, d, in or near the periphery, as seen in iig. V1, for the point or boss, @,(g. 2,) of the springlocking-lever, C, to catch in as the head is turned to the position in which itis desired to stand for any particular j kind of work, it being necessary sometimes to use it in a horizontal position, and at others with one lend orthe other elevated, as shown by the dotted lines in iig. 1. These changes are eiected by pressing the' lower end of o the latch or lever C inward, which relieves the wing w 'of the head, when it may be turned as desired, andthe spring s again forces the lever back into louck with the head. I make the oat F separate, as shown in the drawings, with two lugs, f, their inner edges being be'velled under, or made dovetailing, and so fitted through the mortises made in the head H fortheir reception, that when the key or pine, which is made tapering, is driven in, the auxiliary head F, or iioat proper, and the primary head H, are securely locked together. By these means, when the teethor serrations of the iioat are worn out, it is only necessary to remove the key e and substitute a new Heat-plate, F, simply, which is but a triilinig, expense. The plate or iioat F may be attached by making one of the lugs, f, to hook under the plate of the head H, and making the other one to crowd against the opposite side of the opening throughA which it passes, and a hole drilled through that ear or lug to receive a pin or, both ears may be drilled to receive clamping-pins.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by I [ietters Patent, is- Y 1. The employment or use of the auxiliary or detachable'float-pl'ate F, substantially as and for the purposes shown and described. i
2. Connecting the said plate F to the' head H by means of the lugs f and one or more keys, e, substantially in the ,manner show n and described. A
3. The arrangement of the spring-locking latch or lever C, in combination with the pivoted head H, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth. l G. TOWNSEND.
