To ALL wHoM IT MAY coNcERN:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH MIIlLocHAU, of the city and State of New York, have invented and made Ia certain new and useful Improvement in Retorts for the Manufacture of Illuminating Gas -and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the .said inventiomreferenee being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specication, wherein- 'Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved retort; and
Fignre-2 is a..crosssection of said retort at the line a: x. Similar marksvoi` reference denote the same parts. A v
Retorts have heretofore been made, in which the products offdistillation have been subjected to a reheating previously to their passing to' the hydraulic main. This re-heating has been effected in a separate retort,`and` has not vremoved the difliculty experienced from the formation of tarby the dense carbonaceous matters evolved by the coal under the action of the intense heat to which the coal is subjected when first introduced into the retort. t
The nature of my said invention consists in a platform or false bottom, introduced within the retort, for sustaining the coal, and allowing a space below said platform for the products of distillation to be more perfectly combined by the great heat towhich they are exposed in passing through said space, and going o' by a casing at the end of the retort to the hydraulic main. By this construction a` much more perfect gas is produced, becausev the carbonacedus matters are more intimately combinedthanheretofore, and the production of tar and similar matter is lessened. I
In. the drawing, a represents a retort of any desired size or shape; d is the flanged end of the retort; c is the platform, sustained upon short studs or legs it', and havingan end piece d, with a cap-plate e f is a casing, with a iiange g bolted to the lange 6, and the end piece d is between the flanges f and g, and is packed 'gastight at this point. k is the cap-plate `or cover`to the casing f, secured in place by a. cross-bar, and rendered gas-tight by a luting of clay, as usual. Z is the pipe rising to the hydraulic main.
The cover h is te be removed, and the cap-plate e turned down the coal is then introduced upon. the false 'bottom or platform c, and the cap-plate e turned up or closed, and the cover h replaced, The carbonaceous vapors evolved from the coal'by the heat pass down through the pipes c of the platform c, and travel along between said platform and the highly heated'bottom of the retort the result of which is that the gaseous mattersare more perfectly combined to produce an illuminating gas, and any uncombined or tarry matters that'm'ay remain from one charge are vaporized, and combine with the gases passing olf towards lthe end oftheoperation, Aor with'those evolved from the next charge, thus lessening the production of tar and increasing the illuminating qualitiestof the gas; i
What I claim, and desire to secure by-Letters Patent, is
"The platform or false bottom c, openings or pipes 7c, and cap-plate e, in combination with the retort a, substantiallyas and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I-have hereunto set my signature this thirty-first day of October, A. D. 1866.
A. MILLOCHAU.
