SPOOL-STAND.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters gPatent No. 605,254, dated June 7, 1898.

Application filed June 21, 1897.

This invention relates to spool-stands and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is particularly adapted for use by dressmakers, milliners, and others of this class, but which may also be employed wherever such articles are 'required, a further object being to provide a spool-stand from which the spools cannot accidentally be lost or detached and from which said spools cannot be removed intentionally or otherwise except by onewho has full authority to remove them. 7

The invention is fully disclosed inthe following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which-- Figure l is a sectional side View of my improved spool-stand 5 Fig. 2, a plan view thereof, with part of the construction broken away; Fig. 3, a side view of a spring-arm which I employ, and Fig. 4 an edge View thereof.

In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in 'the practice of my invention I provide a spoolstand which comprises a base 5, to which is secured a standard 6, which is provided at a predetermined height with a shoulder or projection 7. I also mount on the upper portion of the standard 6 a plate or disk 9, which is adapted to turn on the upper portion of said standard while resting on the shoulder or projection 7,,and this plate or disk is preferably in the form of a spider or consists of a hub 10, spokes 11, and an annular rim 12, and secured to the upper portion of the annular rim 12 are a plurality of vertical pins 13, any

desired number of which may be employed.

jacent to the central opening through which the standard 6 passes, and said pin 21 is adapted to be raised or lowered by means of a key 23 or operated in any desired manner, the only object in this connection being to provide a suitable lock whereby the bottom disk or plate 9 may be looked upon the standard 6 and cannot be turned thereon and whereby when the said lock is not in operation the said disk or plate 9 may be turned as desired.

It will be observed that the outer rims 17 and 12 of the upper and lower disks or plates are in direct vertical line, and the rim 17 of. the upper disk or plate is provided at one side with'a large opening 26, and in order to place the spools 24 in position the bottom disk or plate must be so turned that the pins 13 will come directly under the opening 26, and it will be apparent that aspool may be placed on each of the pins 13 by turning said bottom disk or plate, and when each of the pins 13,

with spools the bottom disk or plate 9 is turned 7 and locked in position, so that the spools cannot be removed from their respective pins. The upper disk or plate is placed at such a distance from the top of the pins 13 as to admit of the free rotation of the same, while preventing the removal of the spools except by means of the openings 26, which will necessarily require the free rotation of the lower disk to bring the pins 13 successively in alinement with said opening to permit the removal of each of the spools. I also secure to the overlap the ends of the spools, and said springi arms are provided with transverse openings 29, and the thread from the spools is passed through said transverse openings, and said spring-arms are secured to said disk or plate by means of angular extensions at the lower ends thereof, through which screws 14: are passed. These spring-arms, however, are not absolutely essential to my invention, and it will be observed that I have only shown two spools in position; but it will be apparent that each of the pins 13 is adapted to receive a spool.

Having fully described my invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a spool-stand, the combination of a base, an upright standard, a revoluble plate mounted thereon, upwardly-directed pins supported by said plate,an upper diskor plate mounted on said standard above said revowith vertical pins adapted to receive spools another disk or plate secured to the top of saidstandard and provided with an opening through which the spools may be placed upon said standards, and a lock mounted in said shoulderand the bolt of which is adapted to enter the socket in said plate, substantially as and for the purpose described. 7

3. ;A spool-stand provided with a verticals'tandard, a revoluble disk or plate mounted thereon,and provided with vertical pins which are adapted to receive spools, another disk or plate secured to the top of said standard above said pins, and provided with an opening through which the spools may be inserted, and means for locking the lower disk or plate in position on said standard, the bottom disk or plate being also provided with spring-arms, the upper ends of which overlap the ends of the spools, and said spring-arms being provided with holes or openings through which the thread is passed, said upper plate being in such relation to the top of said pins as to prevent the removal of a spool, substantially as shown and described.
