SULKYv-PLOVV.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,085, dated June 7, 1898.
. Application iiled May 6, 1897. Serial No. 635,383. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern,.- i
- sEN and WILLIAM MERRILL, citizens of the tion will appear inthelcourse of the sub' United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Cacheand State of Utah, have invented a new and useful Sulky-Plow, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to sulky-plows, and has for its object to provide a light and durable plow-'frame of novel construction mount- =ed upon .the carrying-wheels, which are independently adjustable up and down'for adapting the plow to hillside work.
Another aim of the invention is to provide means for counteracting the lateral pressure of the landside and easing the draft of the plow; also, to provide a combined brake and scraper operated by means of "a foot-lever under control of the driver.
Other objects and advantages of the invenjoined description.
The invention consists in an improved sulky-plow embodying certain novel features and details `of construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, Tand incorporated in the claims. n
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sulky-plow constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. l2 is a detail` horizontal section of the same. Figgvl-.is a 'detail vertical cross-section showing Ythe plowshare, itsfstandard, the trailing whfeehand adjacent parte'.4 Fig. 4 is a detail perspective' view showingA the footlever, aipo'rtion of the scraper, andthe interl posed connection; Fig. 5 is a detailY plan' View of the axle on which the trailing wheel is journaled.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.v I
Referring to the drawings, lpdesignates the plow-beam, which is composed of spaced channel-beams 2, having their webs arranged nearest each other and their flanges extending in opposite directions. These channel-,beams are securely bolted together at theirbfront and rear ehds and at intermediate points, if desired, andupon one.si"de ofzthe'y beam thus one 'sidcmof the"fr'ame with a forwardly-extending crank-arm 6, upon which one of the wheels is `journaled, and the rear section of the axle is provided upon the opposite side of the frame with a rearwardly-extending crankarm '7, on which the other carrying-wheel is journaled. A thumb latch-lever 8 is rigidly secured to the rear section of the axle inside ofthe crank-arm 7 and engages with a toothed segment 8, wherebythe wheel on that side may be raised or lowered for the purpose of elevating or'lowering that side of the plowframe. The other or front section of the axle is provided inside of the crank-arm 6 with a rigid crank 9, from which a link 10 extends rearward and connects pivotally with another thumb latch-lever 11, engaginga toothed segment 12, secured to the plow-beam near its rear end. By means of the last-named thumb latch-lever the wheel on that side ofthe ma chine may be raised or lowered, or, rather, the
frame at that sidemay be elevated or depressed, the object beingto enable'the plowframe to be maintained in a level position while being operated on a hillside. t 13 designates the plow-standard, which is secured at its upper end between therear ends of the channel-beams 2 and which has the plowshare 14 rigidly attached to its lower end.
15 denotes a wheel arranged in rear of the plow and having a beveled rim or periphery 1G. This Wheel is j ournaled upon an'inclined axle 17, onthe rear end of Van arm 18, which extends forward and is bent to pass invadvance of said wheel, where it is secured atits foiwardcnd between clamping-bloclis19, secured to the outer side 'of thestandard by means of a U-shaped clip 20, surrounding said blocks and having its L ends inserted IOO through openings in the standard and secured upon the opposite side by nuts. The arm 18 is also connected with the moldboard of the plow by means of a brace 21, having a U- shaped clip 22 embracing said arm. The axle 17 passes through the wheel 15, and the latter is held in place by means of a Cotter-pin 23, passing through the axle. To the inner side of the wheel 15 is secured a cap 2i, which fits over the end of the axle and is provided with a circumferential fiange 25, perforated to receive fasteners, such as screws, by means of which the cap is secured to the wheel. The interior of the cap -t is sufficient-ly large to permit the turning of the eotter-pin without interference, and also forms an oil-cup, in which a supply of oil may be placed for lubricating the axle. lVhen the side pressure is applied to the wheel15 in the operation of the plow, the end of the axle 17 bears against the inside of the cap 2l, thus affording a minimum amount of resistance.
26 designates a rearwardly-projeeti ng arm which is secured at its forward end to the rear end of the plow-beam and extends over the wheel 15. Pivotally connected to the rear end of said arm is a depending bar 27, constituting a combined brake and scraper, the same bearing at its lower end againt the beveled rim or periphery of the wheel 15 and having its lower end or shoe portion bent into L shape, so as to embrace the inside edge of said wheel. From an intermediate point on the bar 27 a link or rod 28 extends forward and connects to a short crank-arm 2f) on a transverse rock-shaft 30, j ournaled on the plow-beam, and having at its inner end a footlevcr 3l, arranged within reach of the drivers foot while sitting 011 the machine. The driver by placing his foot upon the lever 31 may thus press the combined brake and scraper against the wheel l5 with any desired force.
By means of the construction above described a very simple, cheap, and light sullcyplow frame is obtained, and the same may be always maintained in a level position by means of the provision made for adjusting the carrying-wheels up or down. The wheel 15 by reason of its inclined position counteracts the tendency of the landside to press inward, and thereby greatly eases the draft of the plow.
It will be understood that the construction described is susceptible of changes in the form, proportion, and minor details, which may accordingly be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a sulky-plow, the combination with the plow-frame and its carrying-wheels, of the plow-standard connected rigidly thereto, the plow attached rigidly to said standard, a wheel arranged in rear of said plow and mounted upon an inclined axle, and a hollow cap secured to said wheel and inclosing the end of said axle, said eap being arranged to bear against the end of the axle for taking the lateral thrust on said wheel, and also constituting an oilcup, substantially as described.
2. In a sulky-plow, the combination with a share-carrying standard, of a presser-wheel having a beveled rim, an inclined angular hanger arranged to extend in front of the presser-wheel and provided at its rear extremity with a transverse inclined axle on which the presser-wheel is mounted, and a clamp attached to the standard and engaging with the front part of the hanger to hold the latter rigidly on the standard, substantially as described.
3. In a sulky-plow, the combination with a frame and a plowshare, of a hanger attached to the frame and provided with a transverse axle, an inclined landside pressure -wheel journaled on the axle of said hanger, a supporting-arm attached to the frame and extending rearwardly therefrom over the landside pressure-wheel, a scraper hung on the supporting-arm, a treadle-shaft journaled on the plow-frame and provided with a crankarm, and a pitman connected to the crankarm of said treadle-shaft and .to the scraper, for the purpose described, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto allixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
`\VILIIELM G. DANIELSEN. lVILLIAM MERRILL.
