Be it known that I, FRANK CHIMGAR, a citizen 01 the United States, residing ab Tower, in the oounty 0f St. Louis and Statue of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sawing-ll/Iaehines; and I do declare the following t0 loe a full, clear, and exaot desoription 01: the invention, such as will enalole others skilled in the art to whieh it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to oertain novel improvements in hand-power sawing-maohines, and the objeot is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and effeotive devioe of this class.

T0 this end the invention oonsists in the oonstruction, oomloination, and arrange1nent of the several parts of the devioe, as Will be hereinafter more fnlly deseribed, and partiou larlypointecl out in the olain1.

'The aoeompanying drawing shows 1ny invention in oho best form now known to me; hat many changes in the detailsmight be made within the skill of a good meohanio without departing fron1 the spirit of my invention as set forth in the olain1 at the end of this speoifioation.

The drawing is a perspeotive view of my improved sawing-maohine.

1 represents the reotangular frame, comprising the parallel side rails 2 2, suitaloly oonneoted loy the oross-loraees 3, 4, and 5, and

6 denotes a thircl rail fixed in the braces 3 1 about midway between and parallel With the side rails 2 2.

7 8, and9 represent arms fixed at right angles to the rails 2 2 and 6, and eaoh of these arms is provided With a right-angular sheet- 1netal plate 1.0, for1ned With two series of serrations or

11 and 12, the points of whioh are inclined toward the angle of the plates to retain the stiok or log of wood 13 in plaoe while being out.

14 11 denote parallel legs hinged to the rails 2 2, and 15 15 represent diagonal orossed braoes for maintaining said legs in their parallel position. Horizontal parallel hinged braces eonneot the legs and si'de rails on opposite sides o1": the fra1ne, (only one, however,

is shown at 16,) and they are adapted to loe folded to reduoe the spaoe oooupied by the maohine when not in nse.

17 represents an axle or osoillating shaft journalecl in suitable bearings in the upper end of the side rails 2 2, in whioh is adjust ably or removably secured a depending handle 18, seeuredin plaoe loy a wedge 19, and 20 represents a spiral spring enoompassing one end 0f the shaft 17 and having its free ends fixed in the shaft and rail, respeotively.

21 represents the bncksaw, and 22 represents a cla1np fixed to one end of the sawframe and adjustably enoompassing the lower end of the handle 18, so as to support the buoksaw in a vertical position and ab tl1e same time permit it to desoend as it is reoiprooated by the handle 18 to out its way through the wood 13.

23 represents an arm depending from the shaft 17 and 24 denotes a buffer-spring fixed in the brace 5 and projeeting into the path of the lower end of the arm 23 to take np the recoil of the saw when in motion.

25 represents a hook fixed in the braee 5 on whioh to bang the saw when not in use.

In a sawing-maohine, the oombination with the frame, 1, the braoe, 5, and the bufferspring, 2 1, fixed therein, 01: the right-angular serrated plates for1ning a log-support, of the spring-aotuated shaft, 17, the handle, 18, fixed to said shaft, the saw, 21, eonneoted to said handle, and the buffer-arm, 23, depending fron1 said shaft and having its lower end alined witl1 said bnffer-spring, 24, substantially as shown and desoribed,
