TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, THEODORE ZINCK, of 181 Water street, in the city, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Self-Regulating Tension; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of this invention.
' Figure 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a tension, which isapplicable to the thread of sewing machines, or to ropes; telegraph cables, or to other strands which are wound off from a bobbin, and the tension of which is to be kept as near as possible uniform. Said tension consists of a friction spring, bearing on the bobbin from which the thread or strand is to be unwound, in combination with an arm, which is secured to the spring, and over which the thread or strand passes in such a manner that whenever, from any cause whatever, the tension of said strand increases, the friction spring is forced back and the bobbin is relieved, and by these means the tension is equalized and rendered self-regulating. A represents a bobbin from which the thread a is taken. Said bobbin turns freely on a pin or axle b, and it is exposed to the action of the friction spring B, which bears on the surface of the thread, or on the circumference of the bobbin, and which acts as a check on said bobbin, so that a certain strain on the thread is required to turn said bobbin. A set serewf serves to regulate the strain of the spring. From the'spring B extends an arm C, which is curved and bent, so that its end extends parallel to the axis of the bobbin, and on the opposite side of the spring, as clearly shown in the drawing. The thread, on being taken from the bobbin, is passed over the end of said arm, and if the tension of the thread increases beyond the desired point from some cause, for instance, if the bobbin catches so that it cannot revolve with its usual freedom, the spring B is freed off from the bobbin, and by releasing the same the tension is rendered self-regulating. This tension is intended particularly for sewing machines, but it can be used with advantage in all cases where it is desirable to unwind from a bobbin a thread, cord, rope, cable, or other strand.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The arm O, in combination with the friction spring B and bobbin A, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
