SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,455, dated May 24, 1898.

Be it known that I, FRANK A. BROWNELL, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plate-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.

My present invention relates to holders for photographic plates or films; and it has for its object to improve their construction and operation, whereby the plate or film may be securely held, the parts locked by the slide or shutter, and the holder may be very cheaply formed and of light material, as paper or cardboard, if desired; and to these and other ends it consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.

The main portion of the holder consists of a shell or back preferably constructed of paper, cardboard, or, if desired, of metal, and embodying the back 1, having at opposite sides the flanges 2 and at one end the flange or strip 3, preferably of Wood, and provided with the slot for the passage of the slide or shutter 4 of thin material and havingthe operatinghandle 5. Arranged withinthe slot in the strip is the light-excluding flap 6, hinged at one edge by a strip of flexible material 7, such as cloth, extending out of the slot and glued to the front edge of the strip 3, said flap being pressed downward into the recess 8 in the strip 3 by means of light springs 9, arranged in the recess 15 above it, as shown particularly in Fig. 6.

At the end of the shell or back opposite the strip 3 is hinged the plate container, said hinge consisting of a strip 10, preferably of cloth or leather, and the plate container or receiver itself embodies a Way for the shutter or slide 4 and a back or cover flap 11 for the plate 12, as shown. This container is constructed in the present instance of the frame 13, preferably of wood, having the sides of substantially the same height as the side flanges 2 of the back, and the end next the strip 3 is thinner, as shown, when the holder is closed. The outer face of the receiver is composed of an open frame 16, preferably of cardboard, secured to the frame 13, and within this is arranged the inner frame 17, also of cardboard and preferably continued over the thin end 15 of the frame 13 and around at the back of said frame, constituting the back cover flap 11 for the container, as shown particularly in Fig. 3, this flap being unsecured to the under side of the end 15 and rendered flexible at 18, said back-flap being practically hinged to the forward end of the wooden frame. 16 and 17 are separated slightly and form a way for the slide or shutter lbetween them, said way being in line with the slot in the strip 13, so that when the holder is closed and the slide moved in the parts of the holder are locked by the slide, substantially as shown in my prior patent, No. 562,168.

The plate or film 12 may be inserted in the holder by withdrawing the slide and opening it, as shown in Fig. 2, placing the plate inside the frame 13 and against the frame 17, then closing down the cover 11 over it, folding the container and plate against the back 1, and inserting the slide, which looks the parts. In using the holder it is not necessary to draw the slide out of the container, but

simply far enough to leave an unobstructed opening for the exposure of the plate.

In order to hold the plate and prevent it from sliding in the container if it does not accurately fit, I provide the cover-flap 11 with one or more corrugations 20, as shown, which will hold the plate or film more or less firmly in position against the frame 17.

The herein-described holder is particularly adapted to be constructed of paper, cardboard, vulcanized fiber, or other sheet material; but it will be understood that metal could be used and the parts are so simplified that they may be cut out with dies and readily assembled and secured by glue or paste.

I claim as my invention 1. In a plate-holder, the combination with the back having the slotted strip at one end and the flap therein, of the plate-container hinged to the opposite end of the back, open at the front, and having the Way for the slide or shutter and the hinged back cover flap, and the slide or shutter operating in the strip and container, substantially as described.

2. In a plate-holder, the combination with the back having the slotted strip at one end, of the plate-container open at the front and hinged to the opposite end of the back, and having the Ways for the slide and the back cover flap hinged to the rear side of the outer free end of the container and adapted to fold beneath it, and the slide or shutter cooperating with the back and container, substantially as described.
