To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BARBARA MORRISON FERGUS, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Lifters; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to skirt-elevators. My object is to provide a skirt-elevator of simple and cheap construction which can be readily applied to the skirt and be invisible.

and one whereby the skirt' may be lifted evenly and with rapidity and ease.

Having the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of a skirt-elevator of improved construction, as will appear more fully hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device shown applied to a skirt; Fig. 2, a detail view of the lifting-band, parts being broken away to disclose the manner in which the cords are disposed; and Fig. 3, a similar View of the waistband.

The numeral 1 designates a dress-skirt, to the inside of which my improved skirt-elevator is connected. There are two bandsnamely, a lifting-band and a waistband-and these will be described in the order given. The liftingaband is shown at 2, the same consisting of a single piece of fabric bent back on itself and made into annular shape, the edges being connected together by a number of eyelets 3.

The numerals 4: designate fasteners of any desired pattern, which are secured to the skirt and engage with said eyelets, whereby the locking-band is secured to the skirt. The outer ply 2 has a number of eyelets 5.

The numeral 6 designates a waistband adapted to fasten around the waist of the person wearing the skirt and whose ends are fastened together by a hook-and-eye connection 7. This upper band is made of two plies, which are connected together by stitching 8 at their lower edges. The outer ply 7 has a number of eyelets 9 and the inner ply two slits 10 and 11, located adjacent the two eyelets at the front of the skirt, which eyelets I shall for convenience designate a and b. It

is to be noted that the eyelets 5 are located in sets of two, each set being disposed in substantially vertical alinement with one of the eyelets 9. Starting at the front of the skirt it will be seen that there are sets of cords 12, which lead up through the eyelets a b and through the slits 10 and 11. These cords are preferably knotted together at 13, from which point they separate, one cord passing through one eyelet of one of the sets 5 and the other through the othereyelet of said set. The cords then run in opposite directions between the plies of the lifting-band, and each cord leads out through the eyelet of the next set and up to the waistband. These eyelets 9, which are located next the eyelets a b, have double cords running through them and be-. tween the plies of the waistband and out through the slits 10 and 11. The set of cords 12 at the extreme rear of the skirt are knotted together, as before, but instead of both cords passing through one of the upper eyelets 9 they diverge, one cord passing through one eyelet at the end of the waistband and the other through the other eyelet and thence leading in opposite directions and out through the slits 10 and 11. The ends of the cords after being led out through the slits 10 and 11 are connected together by knotting, as at 14. It will thus be seen that pull-cords 15 and 16 are provided at the front of the skirt which may be readily grasped.

It will be apparent that when the pullcords are drawn up the lifting-band will be raised equally at all points and the skirt elevated as far as desirable. The loose ends of the pull-cords can be tied together or caught in any manner preferred, so as to hold the skirt elevated.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. As a new article of manufacture, a skirtlifter comprisinga lower lifting-band adapted to be connected to the skirt and provided with eyelets arranged in pairs at different points around its length, an upper waistband made separate from the skirt and provided also with spaced eyelets, and lifting-cords conneoting said bands and extending in pairs out through an eyelet of the waistband and down,

each through an eyelet of a pair in-the lifting-band, thence in opposite directions along said band, each out through an eyelet of an other pair, and thence up to and through the waistband, the free ends of the cords being connected to form lifting-cords, substantially as described.

2. In a dress-skirt elevator, the combination with a skirt, of a lower lifting-band secured thereto which encircles the skirt and has eyelets at diiferent points of its own length, an upper waistband having a series of eyelets extending around the band, and sets of lifting-cords for the sides of the skirt, the cords of each set having free ends secured together and formed into a pull-cord,

' and passing through one eyelet of the Waistupper Waistband having separated eyelets and lifting-cords extending from the waistband to the lifting-band and arranged in the following manner, to Wit: having their ends connected together, forming two separate pull-cords, then arranged in sets which pass through the eyelets of the waistband, thence down to the lifting-band where the cords of the set separate, being passed through the sets of eyelets of the lifting-band, along said band and out through the eyelets of the next set, thereby forming lifting-loops, and the set of cords at the back of the skirt having their upper ends diverged and passed through the rear eyelets of the band in opposite directions, around said band and connected to the respective pull-cords.
