UNITED STATES j PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE J. RECORD, O'F CONNEAUT, OHIO.
PAH. AN o PACKAG E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,078, dated May 17, 1898.
Application filed Augusi 5, 1897.
T0 a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. RECORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Conneaut, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pails and Packages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to pails Vand other like receptacles which are used for the shipment and storage of butter, lard, and other soft or liquid material, 'as well as candies, chemicals, and other substances, the same being sealed.
The objects of the said inventionare to provide an improved bell-top or Haring top for suspending the pail in a shipping-crate, to improve the leverage of the handle or lever for removing the seal by combining therewith the bell-top as a fulcrum, to make the joint between the bell-top and the body of the pail secure without requiring the use of solder, and, generally, to improve the construction and serviceabilityof sealed pails for the purposes aforesaid.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure I represents a perspective view of a pail embodying my invention, the position of the lever when the seal is about to be raised for opening the pail being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 represents a vertical central section of the same, showing in dotted lines the lever and seal raised.
A indicates the body of the pail, which is shown as tapering downward, but may be cylindrical or of any other convenient form. In this body near the top is formed a circular bead presenting inwardly a groove ct for receiving the peripheral lugs b of my snap-seal cover B, operating as in my reissued patent, No. 11,382. This seal is provided with liftinglever C, which is pivoted to the inner face of its rim, and I prefer to put in it a bend O', formed at such a distance from the pivotal point as to fit easily on the rounded upper edge cl of the flaring bell-mouth top D of the pail or receptacle. A straight lever may be used instead of the one having a bend in it; but the latter is obviously an improvement.
serial No. 647,231. (No model.)
groove a of the said body, the two parts being rolled together, so that the joint will be very secure without using solder, although by preference this is added. A bail E is pivoted to this bell-top just below the rim d and folds within the annular wall A above the seal-cover'B. The outer flange b of the latter rests on the horizontal platform D2. The bottom of this platform is in contact with the upper edge of the can-body and also, extending beyond the same, is adapted to rest on the material of a flat supporting-partition or perforated tray, (indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2,) While the body A will hang through an opening in said partition or tray, fitting it neatly. A number of such pails may thus be securely packed for shipment and storage, the bell-tops preventing them from falling through. This enlarged upper construction of the bell-top adapts the can or receptacle to convenient use as a paint-can when opened, and in the act of opening the increased' distance of its rim d from the center of the receptacle of course improves the leverage. The groove a serves a double purpose in affording anchorage for the lower flange of the bell-top and engaging the lugs of the snap-seal. The contact of the upper edge of the body with the bell-top braces the latter, taking the strain oi the bead and groove when weight or pressure comes on the top and the base of the body is in contact with any unyielding substance. The joint of the bell-top with the receptacle-body, being wholly within the latter, is eiectually protected against external accident and separation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the body of a receptacle having an internal, annular groove near its upper edge, a bell-top for said body fitting within the upper part of the same and provided near its lower end with an annular I01I- IOO In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses. f
