' T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
"Be it known that I, M. M. PETTES, of Oxford, in the county of Worcester, and State of Massachusetts,`
have invented a new and improved Guide to be used in the Filing of Saw-Teeth; and I do hereby declare that `the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and` use the same, reference being had to the accompanying. drawings forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to a new and useful implement or device, to be used for the filing of the teeth of saw-blades, and it consists in so arranging or hanging a guide for the tile used upon a yoke` or frameof` suit-` able shape, to be-itted over the toothed edge of the saw-blade and moved along and upon thesame, as to be sust ceptible of such adjustments, with regard to the length of thesaw-blade, as may be necessary to produce the` desired form, shape, size, or style of teeth thereon, whether the teeth are to have more or less pitch, or to be more or less bevelling, or Aen1ing," so called, or Whether they are to be iiled deeper upon one side of the blade 'than upon the other, as will be obvious from the following detail description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan or top view of` my improved guide, showing it as applied to a saw-blade. f Figure 2, a side elevation of the guide and the saw-blade.

A in the drawings represents a guide, which is made of an angular shape, as shown in figs. 1 and 2 of the l drawings, or, in other words, suitable for being used as a guide or way for the three-cornered tiles ordinarily used in the tiling of saw-blades. This guide A is cut out upon each side at B, and at C is hung or swivelled to p the `upper surface of the Straight side or edge D of the semicircular-shaped frame E, across which frame the t guide extends; its point of hanging to the side D being the centre of the arc or circle of its semicircular side t G. The edge of the semicircular side G is provided with a series of notches or teeth a a, at equal distances: p apart, corresponding to which notches or teeth graduations are made upon the upper face of` the circular bar G, p as plainly shown in the drawings,'which mayor may not be numbered or otherwise properly marked from the l centre division or graduation in a direction toward each end of the bar, for a purpose to` be hereinafter x explained. Over the notched edge of the .circular bar G, a slide, H, is placed, through an aperture in which slide screws the set-screw I of the arm M, projecting from and attached to the under side of the guide A; this arrnlti` having another set-screw N below its screw I, which is in proper position for being set in any one of the series of circu1ar-shaped cavities, depressions, or notches c, made in the face of .the under-projecting or extensionpor` tion, o, of the slide H. At each end, P, of the circular frame E, is a short trunnion pin, Q, by means of which the` l frame is hung in the uprights R of a yoke frame S, which yoke is made of suitable shape for being placed over the toothed edge of a saw-blade, extending down upon each side of the same, where, by means of side set-screlws t l T, at suitable points of its length, it is secured to the saw-blade with suiicient tightnessto hold it firmly thereon, t t;
while at the same time it can be moved or slid with ease forward or backward upon the saw-blade. The central portion U of the yoke frame S, upon its upper sideor edge, is cut out so as `to exposethe edge ofthe saw,fthis cut-out portion of the yoke being of suiiicient length to expose the saw-blade to the action ofthe file used,`even` if ythe guide for the le is set at the most extreme points or ends of the circular bars. allow of its adjustment, as above explained. By the trunnion-pins, the circularI frame can 4be'swungilrthe bearings of the uprights, and thus brought to any plane of inclination with regard thereto, where, by properly i adjusting the Set-screws W, one upon each of its sides, it can be securely fastened and held in position.
Having thus described the arrangement of my improved guide for the iles'used in theling of saw-teeth,
will now 4explain the manner in which it is used upon saws, the blades of which arestraight.` The-Saw-blade is first secured in a clamp X, as is now done when saws are to be filed, and then this clamp fastened in any suitable vise, when'the yoke of the implement is placed over the toothed edge of the saw-blade, resting by its loweredge upon the clamp X at such portion of the same that when the guide is properly'adjustcd, as will be explained, it will be in position, for some one of the several teeth of thelsaw, according to the one at which it is intended to commence the tiling operation, when, the guide being then adjusted in position by means of its several set-screws to correspond with the form, size, style, or shape of tooth which the saw-blade 'is to have, the teeth can be then filed by running`I through the guide the file which is used therefor, and moving the yoke to and on which the guide is hung and arranged, as described, in the proper direction upon the saw-blade to bringthe guide in position for each and all the teeth of the saw-blade in regular order and succession; the sliding of the yoke being gauged by means of a spring-pawl Y hung upon the yoke frame, in proper position for engaging with each successive tooth of the saw-blade after it has been filed, thereby producing a uniformity in the distance between each tooth, as they are severally gai1 gedvby the tooth 4next preceding, an advantage of the utmost importance. By the arrangement of the guide for the le hereinabove explained, it is plain to be seen that, loosening the set-screw I, the guide can be swung around and upon the circular frame to which it is hung, either to the right or left, and thus brought to any desired angle with regard to the length of the saw-blade, according to the bevel or lieining, so called, which the te'eth are to have, when, by engaging such screw I with the notch of the Vcurved bar corresponding therewith, the guide is secured in such position VYthat vif then the set-screw N be loosened or disengaged from the notches c, the guide can be swung upon the circular frame, so as to incline its sides either more or less according to the pitch of tooth desired, where it can be secured by then setting the said screw N in the proper notch of the series of notches c, the depthof tooth being regulated by properly adjusting the set-screws V to raise or lower the-frame E from or to the yoke, and theguide'also adjustedfor the lingof a' tooth deeper upon one side of the blade than the other by tilting the frame E in the proper direction through the set-screws W. v In order to enable the spring-pawl Y to be regulated in position uplnthe yoke frame, accord' ing to the position which the guide occupies, the pawl is hung to a slotted bar, Z', that by means of 'aV set-screw A2 is secured to the yoke frame; the manner of4 adjustment of the pawl Y being plainly apparent, without any furtherexplanation, by -an inspection of the drawings.
From the above description of my improved device or implement to be applied to saw-blades, the teeth of which are .to be led, it is obvious that the filing of the teeth can be accomplished with the utmost uniformity and accuracy throughout the whole length of the saw-blade, and with great rapidity, ease, and convenience an implement, by my invention, being produced, which has long been desired, and which will'proveof greatbeneflt 'and utility. l v
In gs. 3 and 4, a holder for the three-cornered le is shown, by means of. whichthe ile can be used with greater-convenience and ease in the guide A. This holder consists of a suitable shaped frame, B2, to receive the file", and leave one corner or angle and the two sides forming the same exposed for the whole length of the file, and a'handle, C2; the file being secured in the said holder by means of a set-screw, D2, or in any other proper manner, and prevented, by means of the ferrules E2 at each end of the holder, from acting upon thesurfaces or sides of the guides A, over which it passes, as it ismoved forward and backward through the same. In lieu of using a holder for the le, the ile may be used as heretofore, it being only necessary that at Aeach end of the le suitable ferrules should be secured to it to prevent it from acting upon the sides and surfaces of the guide; or that the file should be formed Aat each end with smooth pieces F2, the surfaces-,of which project beyond the teeth of the le, as plainly shown 'in figs. 5 and 6, which form of le is especially adapted for use'V in my improved guide, and on which I reserve to myself the right to make hereafter separate application for Letters Patent; this file, between the two smooth ends, being also made straight in lieu of bulging or concave, as has heretofore been the case. The form of guide A. may be varied in many respects,-according to the shape of the file used, and it may be provided` with friction-rollers if so desired, and therefore I do not intend to limit myself toany one particular form er manner of constructing the same; and furthermore, in lieu of hanging the guide so that it can be susceptible of two movements herein described, viz, being brought to any desired angle with regard to the length of the saw-blade, and its sides so inclined asyto be adfpted to any pitch of teeth, it may be so arranged or hung upon its frame as to tbe susceptiblc'of only one' of said movements, according to which may be the most desirable, but I deem it best to hang it as explained, because its utility and adaptability to all the requirements are thereby much increased. And furthermore, the guide'may be hungdirectly to the yoke frame,
instead of through the circular frame; but in such a case the adjustmentv of thcguide to any depth of tooth, as'
well .as to the filing-of a tooth .deeper` upon one side of the saw-blade than ythe other, could not be obtained.
,It may be here remarked, inlconclusion, that by simply providingA the yoke-frame with an arm susceptible of being increased or' decreased in length, my improved file guide can be adapted to circular, saw-blades as well as straight blades, as has been herein particularly described; the yoke frame, when used upon circular saws, being hung by its armso as to swing upon the centre arbor of the. saw. ` I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-2 1. So hangingvthe guide A, or its equivalentt-to and upon any frame or holder suitable for being secured' upon a saw-blade, that said guide can be adjusted to various angles with regard to the length of the blade, substantially as herein described and for the purpose specified.
2. So hanging the -guide A, or its equivalent, to and upon any frame or holder suitable for being secured upon a lsaw-blade, that the said guide can be adjusted in'position to vary the pitch of the teetlnof the saw-blade, substantially as described, A

So hanging the frame E, or` its equivalento which a guide, A,`or its equivalent, is` seeured in any proper manner, to a yoke or other frame, suitable for being secured upon a saw-hlade, that it can `be either raised or lowered, or so set as to moreor less incline the said guideA, or both, substantially as herein described and for the purposes specied.
