To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALBERT W. TUCKERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wakefield, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement inGas- Cocks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in gas-cocks, and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and effective attachment for the same by means of which the plug-valve will be prevented from accidental displacement after it has been so turned as to shut off the gas, with the result that a careless or ignorant person cannot accidentally turn on the gas after it has been extinguished, thus laying themselves liable to be asphyxiated, as is now often the case.

With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, and then specifically designated by the claim.

In order that those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying draw ings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a gas-cock having my attachment applied thereto, and Fig. 2 a section at the line a: w thereof.

In carrying out my invention as here embodied I secure to the thumb-piece A of the plug B a resilient strip 0 in any convenient manner and bend this strip into such shape that the upper end thereof may be readily at tached to the locking-pin D. This lockin pin passes through a suitable hole in the plug and has its opposite end bent upward, as indicated at E, so as to fit within the notch F, formed in the valve-casing, as clearly shown.

From this description the operation of my improvement willbe obviously as follows: When the valve is in its closed position, the hooked end of the locking-pin will engage the notch in the casing, thus preventing the revolving of the plug to turn on the gas; but when it is desired to accomplish this result the thumb-piece is so grasped as to permit the thumb to bear upon the spring 0, and by exerting a slight pressure thereon the locking-pin Will be forced through the plug sufficient to disengage its hooked end from the notch, after which the plug may be turned upon its axis in the ordinary manner. In extin guishin g the gas the spring need not be de pressed, but the plug has only to be turned upon its axis until the hole therethrough passes out of alinement with the passage in the casing, and when this has properly been accomplished the hooked end of the lockingpin will snap into the notch F, thereby looking the plug against further rotation.

While my improvement is well adapted for use upon all gas-cocks, it is especially desirable in connection with such cocks which are used in hotels where strangers and persons unacquainted with the care of gas-fixtures have access thereto, since it often happens that after the gas has been extinguished it is turned on by accident, and the occupant of the room, falling asleep, is seriously injured or killed by the effect of this escaping gas.

One of the advantages of my improvement is that it maybe attached to an ordinary gas- .cock or manufactured in connection therewith at such a'small additional cost as to render its use universal.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is In combination with a gas-cock, a lockingpin run transversely through the plug of the cock, said pin having one end bent up to engage notches in-the valve-casing, a resilient J-shaped strip having its long end connected to the straight end of said locking-pin and the other end secured to the face of the thumbpiece making the long arm parallel therewith whereby when the thumb-piece is grasped the long arm will also be grasped and pressed inwardly the locking-pin being thereby moved out of engagement with the notches, as and for the purpose set forth.
