Be it known that LVILLIAM ROMUENDER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Sashes; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. 4

My invention relates especially to devices for detachably supporting outside or storm windows, shutters, screens, and the like; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter and subsequently claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an inside view of a window-casing fitted with an outside window embodying my present invention, partly broken away to better illustrate certain details of construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a hinge, and Fig. 5 is a detail side view of a releasing device, forming portions of my said invention.

Referring to the drawings, A A represent the stiles of a window-casing, and B B the stiles of an outside sash supported from the upper opposing faces a a of said casing and adapted to close against the same.

A represents the top of the window-casing, and B' the top of the said outside sash.

In Fig. 4 I show one pair ofthe supportinghinges, each pair being alike except that they are rights and lefts, as shown at D D in Fig. 1. C, Fig. 4, represents the stationary plate of one of my said hinges, secured, as by screws b b, to the face a of one of the windowcasing stiles Aand having an outward-projecting upper corner c, to which is pivotally secured, as shown at d, the upper projecting corner e of the movable part D of said hinge. The said part D is, further, formed with a back plate f, integral with and in the same plane as the described corner e, and with integral right-angularly-bent flanges g h, the upper part of the lange h having an extension i, beneath which (when the hinge part D is closed with the back plate f against the stationary plate C, as in Fig. 1) the lower part Serial No. 649,194. of the said flange h is itself bent at a right angle and tapered downwardly, forming the latch j. These hinges C D C D are Wholly secured to the window-casing stiles without attachment to the detachable outside sashes at all, and the latter are raised up to place with the top B of said outside sash inserted between the iianges g h of the said hinges. ln order to retain said outside sash B B B in this position, I secure slotted spring-metal catches E E to the innersurface of the upper parts of the sash-Stiles B B, as by screws lo 7c, passed through the lower ends of the catches E F. into said stiles, and when the said top B of the outside sash is slipped up between the flanges g h of the movable hinge parts D D the latches j j on said hinge parts are received within the slots m m in said catches E E, the free upper ends of said catches E E resting against the extensions e' of the flanges h of the hinge parts D, as shown best in Figs. 1 and 2. As thus constructed my devices are complete in themselves; but inasmuch as the tops of the catches E E are near the top of the Window-Casin g, and hence too high to be conveniently reached by the hand of a person standing on the iioor, I have added a releasing de- Vice, (shown in detail in Fig. 5,) the same consisting of a hollow cylinder F, having a narrow peripheral transverse slot n to receive the rolled-over upper end o of the catch E and a wider peripheral slot 1o to receive the said catch E in the movement of the said cylinder hereinafter described.

G is a cord, wire, or chain secured to the cylinder F adjacent to the narrow slot n, said cord or analogous device passing down alongside the inside face of the window-casing stile A, being preferably confined by a ring or staple q and terminating in a ring or other suitable pull r. I have described only one of these releasing devices, but it will'be understood that there are a pair of them, one for each catch, as shown inFig. 1.

In practice when it is desired to release the sash B B B the cords G Gr are given a straight pull, which causes a partial revolution of the cylinders F F, whose ends beyond the described slots n p travel on the Iianges h and extensions 1l of the hinge parts D D, thereby drawing the upper ends of thecatches E E away from said hinge-anges until the catches IOO are drawn away free from the latches j j, when the said outside sash will be released and drop down by gravity away from its former position between the flanges g h, so as to be capable of being readily pulled out from the hinges and just as readily replaced therein by insertion and an upward push, as in doing this the catches E E will slide up over the inclined latches jj until the latter enter the described slots m m in said catches.

By reason of the described construction of hinges the detachable sash may be swung out from or drawn close to the window-casing, as desired, or readily removed therefrom, and hence this is a great advantage when such detachable sash is that of a storm window, blind-awning, or insect-screen, and one of these devices may be readily substituted for another Whose sash is provided with the described catches without requiring the services yof a skilled mechanic at any time.

Having thus described myinvention, whatA I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters l Patent, is-

l. The combination with a window-casing, i of movable socket-hinges attached thereto, said movable sockets having exterior latches projecting therefrom,a detachable sash adapted to fit Within said hinge-sockets, and slotted 1y catches secured to said sash for engagement with said latches, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination with a window-casing, of movable socket-hinges attachedv thereto,`

inders adjacent to their points of connection l with said catches, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination with a Window-casing, of stationary hinge-plates secured thereto, movable hinge-plates pivotally secured to said stationary plates and having rightangled anges projecting therefrom forming open sockets, and latches projecting from the exterior of said sockets, a detachable sash adapted to fit within said sockets, and slotted springcatches secured to said sash for engagement with said latches, substantially as set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wiscousin, in the presence of two witnesses.
