To all whom it mar/g concern.-
Beit known that I, ISAAC Q. GURNEE, of Butler, county of Morris, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pocket-Atomizers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the guresmarked on the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of an atomizer to which my invention has been applied, showing the cap -piecedetached. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the atomizer. Fig. 3 is a similar section of a modified form of atomizer. Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of the piston-chamber and the piston-rod and handle. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the screw-cap of the vial or reservoir.
My invention consists of the following construction and combination of parts, the details of which will first be set forth and de-,
scribed and the patentable features of which then pointed out and claimed.
In the drawings, Figs. 1 and 2 represent a pressure form of atomizer, while Fig. 3 represents a suction form of the same. The details in Figs. 4 and 5 are applicable to either form.
' My invention relates to atomizers, and more l particularly to pocket-atomizers, in which the vial and air-forcing means are associated in a compact shape.
1 is the liquid-holding vial.
2 is the plunger-chamber. These are preferably formed or molded in one piece, as shown. I have found that hard rubber is an excellent material for use in making my invention, although any suitable material may be employed. A third or auxiliary chamber 3 is formed in the upper end of the atomizer and is separated from chamber 2 by a diaphragm 4.
In the pressure form of atomizer a screwcap 5 covers the end of the auxiliary chamber 3 and carries the atomizer tip and nozzle 6, which may be of any of the usual constructions. The liquid-tube 7 of the atomizer projects inwardly beyond the air-tube .8 and .passes through an opening 9 between the `.chamber 3 and the vial 1 down into the bot- -tom of the latter. The liquid-tube 7 fits loosely in the opening 9, so there is an air communication between chambers 3 and l. 10 is an air port or opening through the vdiaphragm 4 between chambers 2 and 3.
In the operation of the pressure form of atomizers the liquid to be atomized is introduced into the vial 1 through the screw-cap 11. Upon operating the piston 12 by the han* dle 13 and plunger-rod 14 air is forced through the opening 10 into the auxiliary chamber 3 `under pressure7 a portion of which pressure enters the vial 1 through the opening 9, thereby forcing the liquid therein out through the liquid-tube 7 into the atomizer-tip 6, while a portion enters the air-tube 8 and is conveyed to the tip. An atomizing action then takes place ina manner well understood and Inot necessary to be here described.
In the operation of the suction form of atomizer shown in Fig. 3 the opening 4 is conltinued by means of a tube 15 directly to the atomizer-tip 16, the air issuing from the tip inducing a suction action through the liquidtube 7, causing the liquid to be drawn out of ithe vial 1 and atomized in the usual way. In ithis construction the tube 7 may :fit tightly gthe point where it passes from the chamber E3 into the chamber 1.
The cap 17 is adapted to lit over the izer shown in either Figs. 1 and 2 or that form shown in Fig. 3, so as to protect the parts when carried in the pocket.
In the suction form a spray nasal nozzle 18 is employed, which screws into the open end of the auxiliary chamber 3. When the atomizer is not in use, it is closed by a screwcap 19, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and in full lines,) secured to the end of the plun.
