UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. HOLMES, 0F EVERETT, MASSACHUSETTS.
ATOMIZER.
To all whom. it may concern).
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. HOLMES,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Everett, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented Improvements in Atomizers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
This invention has r ference to improvements in atomizers and relates more particularly to the construction of the atomizer nozlzle and the members cooperating there- Wit 1.
One object of the invention is to provide a cast metal nozzle having an outlet orifice and a surrounding hood or wall, a member of which nozzle has means to receive a tube supporting member of more durable material than said nozzle member.
Another object of the invention is to improve the construction of the atomizer with reference to .the atomizing elements and the return for the surplus liquid.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description.
The invention consists in the improved atomizer having the nozzle integral with the hood.
The invention also consists in the nozzle member having the novel tube supporting member.
The invention also consists m such other novel features of construction and combination of parts as shall hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1, represents a side view of the improved atomizer mounted on a bottle or container for liquid to be atomized and having its air tube provided with a pressure bulb of well known construction.
Fig. 2, represents an enlarged sectional view as taken on line 2-2 Fig. 6.
Fig. 3, represents a similar view with the liquid supply tube and its holder removed.
Fig. 4, represents a cross sectional view taken, on line 4-4 Fig. 2.
Fig. '5, represents a similar view taken on line 5-5 Fig. 2. 4
Fig. 6, is a similar view taken online 6-6 Fig. 2. v
Fig. 7, represents an enlarged view of the tube holder with a p01 tion of the liquid supply tube.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 10, 1918.
Application filed April 9, 1917. Serial No. 160,590.
Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.
In carrying this invention into practice I construct, preferably by casting, an atomizer head having its skirt, atomizer chamber and hood integral whereby soldered, brazed or other joints are'avoided. The article as a whole has a better appearance and the cost of manufacture is considerably reduced. I also find that the improved construction enables me to produce a more durable article particularly as regards the nozzle member which being integral with the skirt or other attaching or securing element cannot become loosened from repeated removals or replacements of the liquid supply tube and its nozzle or because of the repeated cleaning of the nozzle air chamber and its outlet.
As shown in the drawings A represents a bottle r receptacle of any desired shape and size to contain liquid to be atomized or projected by the present device. This bottle A has the neck B screw threaded to receive the interiorly screw threaded skirt 9 of the improved atomizer which skirt -9 is integral with the shoulder 10, having the annular packing receiving channel 11, and with the hood 12 having the outlet opening 13. Annular channel 11 embraces the hub or projection 14 which has the depression 15 considerably larger than its axially disposed screw threaded bore 16 which extends to the air chamber 17 located in the conical member 18 and having the air-supply passage 19 and the outlet 20. Partially embracing the hub 14 is the curved return passage 21 which may be of any shape or size which will not unduly reduce and thereby weaken the integral connection of said hub 14 and shoulder 10.
In the screw threaded bore 16 of hub 14 is removably screwed the tube supportin member 22 which may be of harder meta than said hub and has the flange shoulder 23, and the axially disposed passage 24 terminating in the nozzle 25 which extends into air chamber 17. Shoulder 23 fits depression 15 of hub 14 and has a considerable area bearing against the wall of said depression so that flange shoulder 23 forms a stop to prevent the undue screwing inward of member 22. In this member 22 is secured the liquid supply tube 26 which extends into Said bottle A.
. 'ecured to one side of hood 12 is the air supply pipe 27 which communicates with the I air supply passage 19. Usually air under more or less pressure will be supplied to said pipe 27 by means of the usual compression bulb 0 attached to said pipe.
In the preferred manner of constructing this device a casting is made having the skirt 9, shoulder 10 and hood 12 with its integral member 14: having the depression 15, the passage 16, the air chamber 17 and the return passage 21. An air inlet is formed through the wall to air chamber 17 and passage 16 is furnished with a screw thread. At sometime in the finishing process the article is placed in a lathe and its-exterior is turned down, trued and finished, and finally plated if desired. The parts 22, 26 and 27 are then secured in place.
By this improved construction I am able to produce the main part of the article from white metal so called, preferably making the part 22 of brass.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
said hood, said member having also an air chamber having liquid and air inlets and an outlet, a liquid supply pipe having a screw nozzle screwed in said liquid inlet and having an enlarged shoulder seated against said member, and an air supply pipe fixed on the exterior of said skirt and communicating with said air inlet.
