.IOIIN BUNN, OF BINGI-IAMTON, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE BUNN OIGAR ROLLING MACHINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ClGAR-HEADER AND WRAPPER-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,410, dated March 29, 1898.
Application tiled November 9, 1896. Serial No. 611,495. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..`
Be it known that I, JOHN BUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Headers and Vrapper-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates particularly to that part of a cigar-machine known as the wrapper-stretcher and the header or tipformer.
The wrapper-stretcher has heretofore, so far as I am aware, consisted of a rigid plate slightly convex on its upper surface in crosssection and tapering slightly in both directions from its longitudinal center. It Vhas been found in practice that on account of the gummy matter in the wrapper the wrapperleaf will sometimesadhere to the rigid plate and be torn as it is drawn into the machine and around the cigar-bunch. To overcome this difficulty, I have substituted for the rigid plate a roller journaled in suitable bearings, over which the wrapper is drawn. The roller is rotated by the friction of the wrapper, and should it become gummed the wrapper will separate from it much more readily than it will from a rigid surface and the liability to tear will be almost, if not entirely, obviated.
l With regard to the header or tip-former, in my invention I combine with the header a conical roller, the periphery of which forms a movable portion of the interior wall of the tip-forming chamber and which is held yieldingly, whereby the chamber is adapted to receive and form dierent-sized tips; and my invention consists in the several parts hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure lis a front elevation of my improved Wrapper-stretcher and cigar-header, the bunch-shaping roller and a portion of the paste-reservoir being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a top and Fig. 3 a bottom plan view of the stretcher and header detached. Fig. 4 is an end View of the header, and Fig. 5 is a vertical section on the line a; a; of Fig. 3.
Similar reference-numerals indicate corresponding'parts in each gure of the drawings.
The bunch-shaping rollers are indicated by 1 and the paste-reservoir by 2. The wrapperstretching roller is shown at 3 and the header at 4. The roller 3 is journaled at each end in suitable bearings 5, and, as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the roller tapers slightly from its longitudinal center in each direction to its ends, thus presenting at all times a contact-surface for the wrapper conforming in shape to that of the ordinary wrapper-stretching plate.
The header 4 is provided with the usual tipforming chamber 6 and the side opening 7 for the passage of the wrapper to the chamber. A recess 8 is formed in the lower face of the header and communicates with the tip-forming chamber 6. In the recess 8 the conical roller 9 works, and its periphery forms a movable part of the interior wall of the chamber 6. In the lower face of the header a slot 10 is formed, extending from the recess 8 to the end of the header. This slot has an inclined bottom surface, the greater depth of the slot being at its point of communication with the recess. Within this slot 10 is seated a rectangular shank 11 on a pintle 12, and on the pintle the conical roller 9 is supported to have free rotation. The side 13 of the shank 11, which faces the bottom of the slot 10, is also inclined in the same direction as the slot, but the pitch of the incline is much sharper than that of the slot 10, so that while the end of the shank adjacent to the pintle engages the bottom of the slot its outer end is separated from it. In the bottom of the slot 10 a coiled spring 14 is seated and bears against the shank 11 near its outer end. The shank is pivoted on a pin 15, which is secured in theheader and passes through the shank at a point between the pintle 12 and spring 14. It will be seen that the tendency of the spring 14 is to force the conical roller 9 inwardly into the chamber 6, but that the spring will yield sufficiently to permit the roller to accommodate itself to cigar-tips of varying sizes.
16 represents a passage in the header IOO through which paste is delivered upon the conical roller 9, which in turn Will distribute it over the head of the cigar. The passage 16 in the header is connected to the pastereservoir by the tube 17. v
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new,v and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a cigar-machine having a stretcherplate, a Wrapper-stretcher consisting of a tapering journaled roller on the inner edge of said plate, said roller being rotated by frictional contact With the Wrapper as the Wrapper is fed over the roller into' the machine, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a cigar-machine, a Wrapper-stretcher consisting of a journaled roller rotated by frictional contact with the Wrapper, as the Wrapper is fed over it into the machine, said roller tapering in each direction from its longitudinal center, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a cigar-machine the combination With` a cigar-header having a tip-forming chamber and a recess communicating with said chamber, of a conical roller journaled to rotate in said recess With its periphery forming a por tion of the interiorv Wall of the chamber, said roller being yieldingly supported, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. t.A In a cigar-machine',the combination With a cigar-header having a tip-forming chamber and a recess communicating with said chamber, a pintle the shank of Which is pivoted to the header, a spring seated in the header and engaging the outer portion of the shank beyond its pivot, a conical roller supported on i the pintle to rotatein said recess, the periphery of said roller forming a portion of the interior Wall of the tip-formingchamber, subl stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOI-IN BUNN.
