UNITED STATES LOUIS A. VALDETTARO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,406, dated March 29, 1898.
9 Application filed March 16, 1897. Serial No. 627,837- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS A. VALDETTARO, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to puzzles; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation, but the solution of which is diificult, said solution being capable of accomplishment, however, by the exercise of care, skill, and ingenuity in the manipulation of the device.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a plan view of my improved puzzle, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section thereof.
In the practice of my invention I provide a box or casing which is preferably rectangular and oblong in form and which consists of a bottom 5, sides 6, and ends 7, and this box or casing may be of any desired depth, and supported centrally thereof by means of a trans verse partition-plate 8 or other suitable support is a pivoted plate 9, said plate being provided transversely of its under side and centrally thereof with a groove 10, which is adapted to receive the upper edge of the partitionplate or support 8, and secured to the sides 6 of the box or casing, directly over the pivotal point of the plate 9, are strips 11, which serve to hold the pivoted plate 9 in proper position and to prevent the displacement thereof.
The pivoted plate 9 is provided in the upper surface thereof and adjacent to each end with two cavities or recesses 12 and centrally thereof with a similar cavity or recess, said cavities or recesses being five in number, and I also provide five balls or spherical bodies 13,
which may be of any desired size and which are placed in the box or casing on the pivoted plate 9, and the solution of the puzzle consists in manipulating the box or casing so as to lodge one of said balls in each of said cavities or recesses 12.
The cavities or recesses 12 are very shallow and quite small, and said solution is exceedingly difficult, but may be accomplished by the exercise of care, skill, and ingenuity in the manipulation of the device.-
The solution of this puzzle or the attempt thereat is exceedingly interesting, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and also comparatively inexpensive.
The pivoted plate 9 is not quite as long as the box or casing and said plate is free to swing therein, and the box or casing or the entire puzzle may be made of any desired material.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent v In a game apparatus, the combination with a casing, a partition transversely arranged therein and vertical flanges secured to the side of said casing and terminatinga short dis tance above said partition, of a plate mounted upon said partition so as to oscillate thereon, downwardly-extending lugs arranged upon the under side of said plate and adapted to embrace said partition and retain the plate in its operative position, a plurality of recesses arranged at each end of the plate, a single recess arranged in the center thereof, and a plurality of spheres adapted to be rolled into said recesses, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 13th day of March, 1897.
LOUIS A. VALDETTARO.
Witnesses:
O. GERST, O. G. MILLIN.
