MOUTH AND NOSE GUARD FOR FIREMEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601 ,401, dated March 29, 1898.
Application filed July 10 1 8 97.
' State of New York, have invented certain ne w and useful Improvements in Mouth and Nose Guards for Firemen, &c. of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a mouth and nose guard for firemen, miners, and others in apartments or mines filled with smoke, foul air, or obnoxious gases; and it consists of the novel construction, as hereinafter more particularly described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim. 7 1
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front view of a mouth and nose guard, part of the sponge omitted, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a partial side view and partial section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a top view thereof. Fig. 4: represents a rear view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A-indicates a metallic frame approximately of the shape of the human mouth, having a curved back piece B to fit over the mouth, and the letter O designateswviregauze arranged in back piece opposite the mouth portion.
The letters D and D designate overhanging lips on the front of the guard and having a piece of sponge E or other suitable material fitted between the said overhanging lips D and D and secured in place therein by spring-clamps a a a, hinged to the lower lip.
In the upper overhanging lip opposite the nose I place an opening F to permit breathing through the nostrils.
On the rear of the frame and on each side of the wire-gauze I arrange protecting-cushions Gr, composed of compressed sponge II and inclosed in a covering I, it being ap- SerialNo. 644,157. (ModeL) proximately the shape of the mouth and to fitsnugly thereto.
The letter J designates a piece of sheetrubber or other suitable material secured to the outside of the frame A on the upper side thereof by first sewing the same and then applying a suitable adhesive substance thereto, thus making an air-tight connection of the sheet-rubber to the frame. The upper part of the sheet-rubber is shaped to fit the lower portion of the nose, and in order to make the rubber hold and close in an air-tight manner around the nose I attach springs L L to the upper lip and provide the springs with pressure-pads M M, the rubber piece J having reinforcing-cushions N N thereon opposite the pressure-pads M M, the pressure-pads M M serving to hold the guard in its proper position by pressing the bone of the nose.
open frame, fitting around the mouth, covered with wire-gauze in front of which is a casing for carrying a sponge, to the top of said casing is attached a sheet-rubber flap held to cover the nose byspring-support pads, and having suspending straps for securing the structure, substantially as shown and described.
