Description

uiten tatragatwtffirrt j IMrnovED HORSE-COLLAR;
CHRISTIAN ,wonr, o1? RANTOUL, Y.1.LL1No1s.
` Letten Patent Ne. 60,107, Jeeves November 2v, i866.
A SPECIFICATION TQ ALL WHOM ITMAY ONCERN: f e e ,i
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN WOLF, `of Rantoul, in the county of Champaign, State of Il1iu`o`is,hhave invented a new and improved Horse-Collar; `and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, cleaidaixti` in which- Figure'l is .a front view of the collar.` Figure 2 is a view of the opposite side of the collar. igure 3 is a vertical section through the collar. Figure 4 is an edge or side viewef the dollar. d d Figure 5 is a modification of the stay blockoffigs. 1, 2,V and 3, which is applied at `the top`of the collar. i Figure is a perspective view of a trac'efhook niartingale4 ring and connecting staple of one side ofthe collar. Figure- 7 is a `perspective view of the stay-block vof iig. 5. d
vSimilar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts `inV the several figures.`
This iuventionr'elates to certain novel improvements on horse-collars, which are so constructed as to dispense with separate haines, the trace-hooks, rein-rings, and other parts belonging to haines, being securedrmly'to the` collar, and forming part of it. The naturelo'f my invention consists in the application to a wooden horse-collar, l
which is suitably padded on that side which presses against the horse, of devices-ford adjusting the upper and the lower parts of the collar to fit horses of different size; said' devices being adapted for sustaining 4the sides d of the collar rmly in the desired position, as will be hereinafter described. It also consists in a novel mode of attaching the trace-hooks to the sidesjfjthe collar, whereby great strength and security are obta-inetL'asV will be hereinafter described. i d e To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
Inthe accompanying drawings, AArepresent the two sides of the collar, which are `made of wood, properly j shaped to fit the neck of a horse, andpadde-donthose sides which press'upon the animal. The padding consists of pieces -of leather B B, which are nailed on the collar sides A A,'and stuii'ed in a suitable manner` to prevent injury to the animal, and to' protect him`from the wooden parts. The shape of the collar resembles thelwellknown shape of the stuffed leather collar, with this exception: thestu'ed leather collars have creases for l.
receiving and keeping in place the haines, whilein my collar,` where haines are not used, suchcreaseshare not made. The upper ends of the side pieces A A are attached together by means of a hinge,` a, which consistsiof, two wide metallic plates jointed centrally between the two horns b b, and secured in`place by means of rods or tangs a a', which are formed on their hinge-plates, and which pas laterally throughlthe horns b, and receive on their ends nuts c c, by means of whichthe upper ends of the sides A A are drawn tightly against' a stayblock d, which is interposed between these ,sides just at the upper curve or arch of the collar. Instead of employing a stay-block, al, which has tenen` dlupon it, as shown in fig. 3, and which involves the necessity of carving the arched projections e e, on the wooden sides AA, these projections may be omitted,`and` arched blocks of the form shown in figs. 5 and 7 used instead of the pieces of the form 4shown in figs. 1, 2, and 3.`
The arched blocks gbeing made-of diierent lengths, the upper part of the collar can be made wider or narrowerf` i as may be required, by interposing a block of the proper length. The blocks g are confined in `place `between the upper end of the collar sides by the hinged rods and clamping nuts above described;l and if desirable, said blocks may be secured to the hinged plates a by means of screws,'or in any other suitable manner. A strap, D, is wound around the stay-block and hinge-plates, and buckled, so as to protect thev neck of theanimal from injury. The lower endsof the side Vpieces A are 'connected together by means `of a transverse adjusting screw, 0,'which passes loosely through a projecting ear,h, and is tapped through a corresponding ear, h. These ears are vformed on plates which receive and are rigidly secured to the lower ends `of the side pieces A A, as shown in iigs. 1, 2, and'3. The screwC has a head formed `on one end for receiving'a rod or a wrench for turning it, and-thus contracting or expanding the lower part of ,the collar. Therslioulders, which are formed on that part of the screw C which turns loosely -in the ear h, prevent end'wisevmovement of this screw, and
consequently hold the lower ends of the collar sides firmly in the desired position. The rings jj, which are secured rig-idly to the sides of the collar near the horns b b, are intended for receiving through them the reins.
Thehooks k l5 are intended as `fastenings for the freut ends of the traces, and the rings s snarevused asa.V
exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, making a part of` this specification,- d
means for attaching the martingales to the collar. The-hooks and rings, 7c and s, are pivoted to the staples E E, the ends of which pass throughtlie wooden side pieces, and receive on ther ends nuts, as shown in 6, lThe nuts on the staples rhold them firmly in"place, and are recessed into the 'collar sides and covered by the paddingv B, so as not to injure the neck of fthe horse.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is 1. Connecting 'the upper' ends of the side pieces A A of a wooden collar together by means of a hinge a,
Aand clamping-nuts c c, in vcombination with an interposed block foil staying said parts A A laterally, substantially as described. l
2. The leather strap D, applied to the upper part of the wooden collar, substantially and fol" the purpose described; t 'l v n Y 3. Connecting the lower ends ofthe sideA pieces A A together by means of an adjusting screw C, substantially as described.
4. Connecting the trace hooks c and rings s to thewooden sides-A A of the collar, by means substantially l as described.
5. In combination withv the Wooden side pieces A, and padding B, I claim the hinged clainp a, movable block d or g, and the adjusting screw C, all constructed and operating substantially as described.
