CLAMPCFOR REVERSIBLE BROOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,956, dated March 22, 1898.
Application filed January 18, 1898. Serial No. 667,069. (No model.)
e'Xact description Yof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame.
My invention relates to clamps, the same being especially designed for the purpose of providing means for the attachment of a street-sweeping brush and scraper to the handle thereof, which will permit of the reversal of the brush and enable a single clamp to hold both the brush and scraper in place.
The invention consists of a clamp comprising a movable clamping member and a pivot-v ally-mounted clamping member, the latter being pivoted to the body of the clamp at a point intermediate of its ends and provided with engaging portions at its opposite ends.
More specifically the invention consists of a base-plate provided with means for attaching-the handle thereto, having a downwardlyextending flange at one end provided with an opening for the reception of the adjustingscrew for the movable member of the clamp, and with ears or lugs upon the opposite end members having oppositely-disposed engaging portions, one of which is adapted to bear against the back of the brush and the other to hold the .scraper in place between it and the end of said base-plate.
The invention also consists in other details of construction and combinations of parts r plate 1, having an angularly-disposed socket 2 on the upper side thereof for the reception of the handle 3. At one end of the base-plate 1 is formed a downwardly-extending iiange 4, and adjacent to said flange is an elongated slot 5.' Extending through a threaded opening 6 in the flange 4 is a thumb-screw 7, whose inner end engages the movable member 8 of the clamp, the same being provided with a contracted portion 10 and a head 11. The contracted portion of this member fits and moves' within the slot 5 and the head prevents the accidental removal of the same from the baseplate and also serves to guide said clamping member in its movement back and forth in said slot. At the opposite end of the baseplate 1 are formed two downwardly-extending lugs or flanges 11a 11a, each of which has a bifurcated lower end formed with loops 12 for the reception of a pin 13, by means of which the clamping members 14 are pivoted to said flanges. The said clamping members are pivoted to the lianges 11a at points adjacent to their longitudinal centers, forming engaging portions 15 and 16 at opposite ends thereof. The engaging portions 15 are adapted to bear against the back of the brush 17, and the engaging portions 16 are adapted to hold the scraper 18 in place.
From the foregoing description it is thought that the operation of my device will be readily understood. Briefly stated, however, it is as follows: In the use of street-sweeping brushes or other brushes lof a similar nature and adapted to a similar use it is found that after a few days wear the bristles thereof will all be turned or bent in one direction. In order to overcome this bending action of the bristles, which decreases the efficiency of the brush and causes it to become useless, my clamp has been devised, which provides means whereby the position of the brush may be reversed relative to the handle thereof, so that when the bristles have been bent in one direction the brush may be removed from the clamp, reversed therein, and the brush used as before, so that the tendency will be to restore the bristles to their normal positions at right angles to the back of the brush. To effect the operation just described, it is merely necessary in order to remove the brush from the clamp to unscrew the thumb-screw '7, which will withdraw the movable member S from its engagement with the back of the brush. lVhen this has been done, the brush can be taken out, reversed, replaced, and the movable member S of the clamp restored `to its original clamping position in engagement with the back of the brush.
It will be observed that when in place the brush is held along its opposite side edge by the engagement of the lower engaging portions 15 of the pivoted clamping members 14. As pressure is applied tothe engaging portions 15, however, the engaging portions 16 of the clamping members 14 are forced rearwardly or in a direction opposite to that of the lower engaging portions 15 and clamp the scraperlS in place. The said clamping members 1i therefore perform the double function of holding two separate parts in place.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a clamp, the combination with the body, of a pivotally-mounted clamping member thereon, a movable member, and means for moving the latter.
2. In a clamp, the combination with the body, of a pivotally-mounted clamping member thereon provided with oppositely-disposed engaging portions, a movable member, and means for moving the latter.
3. In a clamp, the combination with the body, a movable clamping memberand means for moving the same, of a second clamping member pivoted to the body at a point intermediate of its ends forming oppositely-disposed enga-ging portions, one of which is adapted to oppose the pressure exerted by the movable clamping member and the other to bear against a stationary part of the clamp.
4. A clamp for the purpose described comprisinga base-plate having a flange at one end provided with a threaded opening for the reception of an adj ustingscrew and a flange or lug at the opposite end, a movable clamping member swiveled to the inner end of said thumb-screw, and a second clamping member pivotally mounted at a point intermediate of its ends to the flange at the opposite end of said base-plate, as and for the purpose set forth.
5. A clamp for the purpose described comprising a base-plate provided with a socket upon its upper side for the reception of a handle and having a downwardly extending ilange at one end with an elongated slot adjacent thereto, the said iiange being provided with a threaded opening for the reception of an adjustingscrew and the said plate being further provided with iian ges or lugs at the opposite end thereof, a movable clamping member swiveled to the inner end of said adjusting-screw provided with a contracted portion which fits within said slot and with a head which bears against the upper. end of said plate adjacent to said slot, and pi votallymounted clamping members upon the flanges at the opposite end of said plate provided with oppositely-disposed engaging portions, one of which is adapted to coact with the movable clamping member forholding a brush in place and the other to secure a scraper to the baseplate.
In testimony whereof I afl-lx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
