FEEDING DEVICE FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERIC BERNHARD I IY- LANDER, a citizen of Sweden, residing at Ornskoldsvik, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feeding Devices for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sewing-machines, and has for its object to make the construction simpler than heretofore.
The machine has the same advantages as those heretofore in use and, besides, works I 5 nearly soundless, owing to the omission of cog-Wheels.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my machine. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. t is a vertical longitudinal section, the upper part being broken away. Fig. 5 is an under side view. Figs. 6 to 9, inclusive, are detail views.

A is the bed-plate of the machine-frame, and B the usual bent stationary arm rising from the bed-plate, said arm being provided at its end with a head 13, in which both the 0 needle-bar and the presser-bar are movable up-and down. On the arm B is, as usual, a vertical pin for a spoolT and athread-tension 0, from which the thread passes through a hole N in the needle-bar to the eye of the nee-r 3 5 dle. The needle-barE receives its up-anddown movement by means of the following arrangements: On the driving-shaft D of the machine there is a crank or crank-disk V, the pivot of which, being provided with an antifriction-roller V or not, moves in an angleshaped slot Y in the one end of an oscillating lever O, fulcrumed on a pivot U, the other end of said oscillating lever being connected with the needle-bar by means of a short link, for instance. The crank-diskVbeing turned around, the verticalpart of the oscillating 1ever receives, as easily may be. understood, an oscillating movement to the right and to the left, and its horizontal part on the other side of the pivot, and consequently, also, the needle-bar connected with it, receives an oscillating movement up and down.
On the needle-bar E is provided a sleeve Z, which may be fixed at a suitable point on the needle-bar by means of a set-screw, said sleeve being connected by means of a link L with the front end of the oscillating lever O, which is fixed thereto by means of a screw. By this arrangement the machine is made independent of the length of the needle, which is a great advantage.
The presser-foot differs from those before known and is made adjustable for strong or weak pressure. For this purpose there is arranged on the presser-bar a sleeve I, provided with hooks with which a pin 1, fixed on the bar, engages. By shifting the sleeve so that the pin 1 engages with one of its lower hooks a spiral spring K, fixed between the sleeve and an abutment on the head B, is compressed more than when the pin, as shown in the drawings, engages with the uppermost hook.
The lifting and retaining of the presser-bar in the lifting position is accomplished by lift- 7 5 ing the bar by hand and then turning it a little. A pin M, carried by the presser-bar and inserted in a hole in the'head B when the presser-foot isin its lower position, is then lifted out of the hole and rests against the top of the said head B, and thus the presser bar and foot are held in that position. As soon as the presser-bar is turned so that the pin M is inserted again in the hole the bar is pressed down by the spring K and its presser-foot is pressed against the cloth and holds it fast.
The shuttle-conductor F consists of an arm fixed on a short shaft 00, parallel with the driving-shaft D, said first-mentioned shaft receiving a backward-and-forward rocking move- 0 ment from the above-mentioned pivot X by means of the rod Z, movably connected with said pivot, the other end of the rod being movably connected with a crank 'u, fixed on the shaft 00 of the movable shuttle-conductor.
P is the shuttle-plane, and S the shuttle.
In order to enable the use of shuttles of different lengths, the crank-pivot connecting the rod Z with the crank o of the shaft as of the shuttle-conductor F is to be adj usted--for instance, in a notch or slot in the crank 'vso that the active length of the crank '12 may be lengthened or shortened as required.
The feed device G consists of a lever movable on a pivot 9 up and down and forward and backward, and at one end it is influenced by a springf. The up-and-down movement is performed by a cam or eccentric 00' on the shaft 00 of the shuttle-conductor F, against which eccentric the feed device is pressed by the spring f. The forward-and-backward movement is effected by means of a lever m, fulcrumed on a pivot 25, the other end of said lever having a slot a, into which the pivot X of the driving-shaft D extends. For this purpose the lever m is provided with an incline 8, against which a roller is on the feed device is pressed by the spring f.
To regulate the length of the stitch, an arm r is movably fixed to the bed-plate A, the free end of this arm being shaped like a pawl, while its rear end forms a spring which causes the pawl to engage with a series of teeth q, formed on the bed-plate, so that the arm 7', moved by hand,is by its pawl portion engaged with any tooth of the series. The regulatingarm 1 is placed in front of the feed device G in its path. Consequently by adj usting the arm 0" on the series of teeth q the backward movement of the feed device, and thus also the length of the feed, is always limited.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a sewing-machine, the combination, with the spring-controlled feed device G, of an oscillating shaft 00, provided with an eccentric 03 arranged underthe operative end of the feed device for imparting an up-and-down movement to the same,and an oscillating lever m extending alongside the feed device and actuated from the driving-shaft of the machine, said lever m having an incline at one side against which a side portion of the feed device is forced by its spring, whereby the backward-and-forward movement is given to the feed device, substantially as set forth.
