SPINDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,634, dated March 15, 1898.
Application filed June 15, 1897. Serial No. 640,814. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND OOIRIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Paterson, county of Passaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spindles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,'clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The obj ect of this invention is to provide a flexible connection between a spindle-supporting tube and the spindle-rail, to thus render the spindle capable of adjusting itself to an unbalanced load.
The invention consists in the arrangement of a compressed-air or pneumatic cushion be tween the spindle-supporting tube and the spindle-rail, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a spinning-spindle and its supporting tube mounted on a spindle-rail by means of my improvements, certain portions of the latter and of the spindle-rail being shown in sectionrto better illustrate the nature of my said invention; and Fig. 2, a perspective detail view illustrating one form of compressed-air or pneumatic cushion used for flexibly mounting the spindle-supporting tube on the spindle-rail.
In said drawings, (1 represents the spindlerail, provided with a vertical hole or opening e and on one side with a substantially horizontal hole or channel d, communicating with said opening. Within the hole or opening 6 of the spindle-rail is arranged a hollow annular ring or cushion a, provided at its up per portion with an annular flange b and having its lower portion projecting below the lower surface of the spindle-rail d. Said hollow annular ring or cushion a is preferably made of vulcanized rubber or any other suitable flexible and air-tight material, and the chamber a in said ring or cushion is filled with compressed air, which is pumped in through the valve 0 of ordinary and wellknown construction and extending into the horizontal hole at of the spindle-rail. Said annular ring or cushion a is penetrated by the tube f, containing step and bolster bearings for the spindle 70, having a sleeve m and whirl n and resting with its annular flange g 7 upon the annular flange b of the ring or cushion a. A metallic washer t'bears against the lower portion of said annular ring or cushion a and is held in contact therewith by means of the nut h, as clearly illustrated in the drawings. The tube f is thus yieldinglysupported by the compressed-air or pneumatic cushion, and its flexibility can be easily regulated by changing the state of compression within said cushion or ring,which can be accomplished by adjusting the nut h, as will be manifest.
, I do not intend to limit myself to the pre cise construction shown and described, as various alterations can be made without changing the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a spindle-rail provided with a vertical hole or opening and 011 one side with a horizontal hole or channel communicating with said opening, of a supporting-tube penetrating said hole or opening and containing step and bolster bearings, a spindle in said tube, a pneumatic cushion in the hole or opening and surrounding said tube, and a valve on said cushion extending into the horizontal hole or channel of the rail,
substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination with a spindle-rail provided with a vertical hole or opening and on one side with a horizontal hole or channel communicating with said opening, of .a tube penetrating said hole or opening and provided with an annular flange, a pneumatic cushion in said hole or opening and surrounding said tube and bearing with its top portion against the under side of its'annular flange, a valve on said cushion extending into the horizontal hole or channel of the rail and a nut or intermediate washer on said tube bearing against the under side of said pneumatic cushion, substantially as and for the purposes described.
