To all whom it may concern.-

B it known that I, GEORGE F. NEWELL, of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Conveying Apparatus, of which the following is a specification;

My invention is an improvement in conveying apparatus for use in handling material, especially that which it is desired to weigh at one point and pack at another, and has for an object, among others, to provide a simple construction by which the weighed, proportioned, inspected, or other material may be conveyed to the packing-point, deposited there, and the emptied vessels returned to the starting-point; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side View, and Fig. 2 a top plan view, partly broken away, of the improved apparatus. Fig. 3 is an end view, and Fig. 4 a cross-sectional view, of same.

My apparatus is especially designed for handling manufactured tobacco, such as granulated tobacco and cut-plug, which is weighed or measured at one point and then packed at another point or points. In the construction shown I employ a main table A and a return table or carrier B, arranged above and supported from the main table. These tables may be of any suitable size and length, the main table having suitable legs and the upper or return carrier being supported by standards from said main table.

The main table A is provided with slots or openings C, through which passes the upper run D of the carrier-belt or apron D, such run D of the belt lying in the plane of the table A, or approximately so, as shown.

The upper or return carrier F is shown as narrower than the table A and is closed in at its sides and bottom by a casing G, which prevents any sagging of the lower run of the belt or apron and also protects the operatives from injury by said belt. The main and return belts are geared together at H and may be driven by any suitable power in any desired manner, the upper run of the main belt moving in a reverse direction to the upper run of the return-belt, so the material may be carried by the main belt in one direction and the emptied vessels returned by the upper belt moving in the reverse direction.

The main table and belt are provided with one or more switches I, and the return table and belt has a switch J, such switches I and J being alike and provided with series of rollers I and J, which reduce the friction in deflecting the material.

In securing the switches I provide the table A and carrier B with pin or bolt holes J properly arranged, as shown, and secure the switches by bolts or pins I J passing from 6 5 the switches through orinto the openings, the arrangement being such that the switches are pivotally and detachably secured at both ends, and may consequently be adjusted across their respective belts in such manner as to discharge the material on the belt to one or the other side thereof.

Near the discharge end of the return-belt I provide an inclined chute K, leading down from the upper run F of such belt just in advance of the switch J and discharging into a box or trough K.

In use an operative at one end of the main table can weigh or otherwise deal out the tobacco or other material and place the same in suitable boxes or vessels and put the latter on the carrier-belt, by which it may be conveyed to the filling or packing operative, the switch being properly adjusted to discharge the material to such operative, who can place the emptied vessel on the upper or return belt, by which it will be conveyed to and switched into the chute K and trough K in convenient reach of the operator, resulting in a great saving of time and labor.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,'is

1. An apparatus comprising the main table, the main carrier having its upper run approxi- 5 mately in the plane of the table, and the return-carrier substantially as described.

2. In an apparatus, the combination of the main table, the main carrier having its upper run approximately in the plane of the table, the latter extending laterally beyond the carrier whereby to receive material therefrom,

the switch extending across the carrier and devices whereby the opposite ends of,;said

switch are pivotally and detachably secured whereby the switch may be adjusted to discharge to either side of the carrier substan .tially as described.

3. An apparatus, comprising the main [carrier and the switch extending diagonally" across the same and provided with a series of rollers turning on vertical axes and arranged in close relation forming the switching-surface substantially as described.

4. An apparatus comprising the main table having slots or openings; the carrierbelt'-opcrating in said slots on openings and'having its upper run approximately in the'plane of said table, the return-carrier located above the said carrier-belt and havingits belt geared therewith and the, switches substantially as described;

The. herein-described apparatus for conveying tobacco and thelike consisting of the main table, the main carrier having its upper 7 run approximately inzthe plane of the said ta ble, the table extending laterally beyond the carrier in position to receive material dischargedfrom said run of the main carrier,

6.
