SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,734, dated March l, 1898. Application filed June 8, 1897. Serial No. 639,907. (No model.)

Beit known that I, EDUARD RUNGE, a suhject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of 3l Briickenalle, Berlin, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Cash-Register, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a cash-register with adding apparatus the keyboard of which has a key for each of the different rows or series of hgures-for example, for the units, tens, hundreds, &c.by depressing which a suitable number-drum of an indicating device is set in rotation, in addition to the accounting-disk,so that the number corresponding to the key struck becom es visible through an aperture.
This invention also relates to devices for limiting the stroke of the key-levers and also to devices by means of which While the depressed key -levers are temporarily locked the numbers on the numbered drums, which are rendered visible at each operation of the machine through the apertures, can be read off and checked-before the/numbered drums are moved back into the original O position. The arrangement is such that the disengagement and locking of the keys depend on the opening and closing of the lid of a till or mon ey-drawer, devices being provided for rendering the operation of the key-levers impossible while the till is closed, so that said operation can only be eitected on opening the till.

The invention further comprises the arrangement of step-by-step or ratchet mechanism for the numbering-disks of the ladding apparatus, which should be so arranged as to prevent the numbering-disk that is to be advanced i rom being rotated after each advance movement beyond the stroke necessary for such advance movement.
The accompanying drawings illustrate, by Way of example, a cash-register which is provided With improvements forming the subject of this invention.

Fig. 9 illustrates the connection of the printing apparatus with the other parts of the apparatus, said parts being in a position of rest. Fig. 10 shows the step-by-step or ratchet mechanism according to Fig. 6 at the end of its operation. Fig. 1l is a partial plan according to Fig. 9.
ln the arrangement shown in the drawings the apparatus is provided with tive ratchet sets I Il Ill IV V. Each set comprises an adding apparatus, with advance movement for the tens, and an apparatus for indicating for the purpose of checking the numbers that are rendered visible,said numbers being borne by two indicating-drums, one for checking by the seller and the other for checking by the purchaser. The several ratchet sets can be operated independently of each other, but are connected together by transfer mechanisms. Each set is provided with a key l, which is IOO connected (preferably by means of a spring 4) with a rocking lever 3, which is mounted loose on a shaft 2, that is common to all the sets. The rocking lever 3 carries a pawl 5, which engages in the -teeth of a ratchet-wheel 6, that is fixed to the shaft 2. The ratchetwheel G is connected in a suitable manner with the counting-disk of the adding device, as will be described hereinafter.
The devices for limiting the stroke of the key-levers 3 are arranged as follows: On the rocking lever 3 there is pivoted a pawl 7 in such a manner that on striking against a suitable stop it can be caused to engage with the teeth of the ratchet-wheel, Fig. 2, and thereby prevents further movement of the latter, while normally it is raised by means of a spring 8 or the like from off the ratchetwheel, Fig. 1. Vithin the range of movement of these pawls 7 there are arranged tipping shafts w' to2 to w8, which'preferably extend through the whole of the sets (I to V) and are provided on their lower sides with grooves u, such that on the rotation of the rocking lever 3 of any one of the ratchet sets the free end of the corresponding pawl 7 can slide in the said grooves when the tipping shafts zu to w8 are in their normal positions. Each tipping shaft w to w8 is provided with a tappet cl, Fig. 4. At a suitable point of the apparatus there are arranged spring-keys or press-knobs la to las, Fig. 4, which cooperate with the tappets d of the shafts wto w8. vOn depressing one of the press-knobs-for example, kl-the corresponding shaft 107 is turned over, so that the groove u moves out of the path of the pawl 7 and the solid or full surface of the shaft 107 enters the said path. Consequently on a rotation of the rocking lever 3 the pawl 7 meets an obstacle in the tipping shaft Q07, which is turned over by the press-knob 7c, so that its lower arm enters the teeth of the ratchet-wheel 6 and locks the latter.
The arrangement shown is provided for reproducing the numbers of the decimal system.
The shafts w to w8, with their corresponding press-knobs k to 798, correspond to the numbers 1 to 3. rlhe normal position of the rocking lever 3 corresponds to the figure 0. For the figure 9 a full or solid fixed shaft wf is provided, which forms the limit for the greatest stroke of the rocking lever 3. For this shaft wf there may be provided, if desired, for the purpose of completing the keyboard of the apparatus, a iixed or blind key kg, Fig. 4. In order to return the rocking lever 3 into its initial position after each stroke produced by the depression of the key 1, there :is employed a spring 18, which is fixed to the arm 17 of the rocking lever 3 and which is tensioned by rotation of the rocking lever and has then the tendency to turn the rocking lever back in the opposite direction. Movement beyond the O position is prevented by means of a stop 19. In front of the shaft wthere is further provided a tipping shaft wo, such that in the position of rest of the apparatus it turns its full or solid surface toward the pawl 7, so that automatic or unintentional movement of the rocking lever and of the ratchet-wheel 6 from the 0 position is prevented. On the rotation, which takes place in the manner hereinafter described, of the shaft 100 a groove u in the same is turned toward the pawl 7, so that the latter can then slip through the same.
The rocking lever 3 is provided with a toothed arc 9, which engages with a toothed wheel 10, the axle 11 of which' carries the numbered drums 12 and 13 of the indicating apparatus. The figures on the numbered drums l2 and 13 are visible through openings 14 and 15 of the casing 16, one opening being turned toward the purchaser and the other toward the seller. On the rotation of the rocking lever 3 the devices herein described 'move with them the number- drums 12 and 13,
so that the required figures on the numberdrums 12 and 13 become visible through the apertures 14 and 15. When the rocking lever 3 is in the O position, the figure 0 is visible at the apertures, and when the keys l and 7o are operated the figure 1 appears, and so on. The tipping or rocking shaft wo, which locks the rocking lever 3 and the ratchet-wheel 6 in the O position, is connected, by means of a rod 20, with a rear shoulder 2l of the lid of the till 22 in such a manner that when the till is closed the said shaft will assume the position shown in Fig, 1- that is to say, acts to lock the pawl 7. On opening the till the shaft wo is turned over, so that the groove a0 will permit the passage of the pawl, thus allowing of rotation of the rocking lever 3 and of the ratchet-wheel G.
The temporary locking of the rockin g lever 3 and the number-drums l2 13 after each adjustment is effected by means of the following devices: At a suitable point in each ratchet set (l to V) there is pivoted a pawl 23 in such a manner that it is caused by the action of a spring 24 to have a tendency to bear against the toothed rim of a toothed arc 25, which is connected with the ratchet-lever 3; but it is prevented from so doing while in a position of rest by means of a rotary adjusting-shaft 26. This shaft 26 is common to all the sets, Fig; 2, and is provided with a through-recess 27, such that the latter when the shaft 26 is rotated allows of the entry therein of the pawl 23 of the corresponding rocking lever 3, that is being operated at the time, and allows the said pawl to engage with the teeth of the corresponding arc 25 in such a manner that a rearward rotation of the rocking lever 3 is prevented., The shaft 2G carries an arm 28, which is jointed to a rod 29, that is held by a spring 30 in the position of rest in such a position that the shaft 26 lifts all the pawls 23 away from the corresponding toothed arcs 25. The rod 29 projects in a recess 31 of the frame A, Fig. 1. On completely opening the till 22 a pin 32, provided on the same, enters the re- IOO IIO
cess 3l of the frame A and thereby forces the rod 29 into the position shown in Fig. 2, whereby the shaft 26 is turned over, so as to release the pawl 23. The pawl 23 belonging to the ratchet set that is being operated at the time then engages in the adjacent toothed arc 25, whereby a backward rotation of the corresponding rockinglever 3 is prevented until on closing the till 22 the pin 32 moves out of the recess 3l and releases the rod 29, whereupon the latter is moved back into its initial position by the spring 30. l/Vhile the till is open and the lid raised, the pawl 23 will engage the teeth 25 and prevent the retraction of the arm 3. The lid 22 is further preferably provided with a catch 33, which when the till is opened engages with a corresponding catch 34 of the frame A and then holds the till 22. Further, the till is also preferably provided with an alarm 35, the operatinghainmer 36 of which is locked by a shoulder 37 of the till 22 when the till is closed, but when the till is opened is released and is caused by a spring 8S to strike against the bell 35.
The printing apparatus is arranged upon the side of the casing A of the apparatus, and is constructed as follows: The rocking lever 3 of each ratchet set carries a toothed arc 39, Fig. l, which engages in a corresponding toothed wheel 4l, mounted on a shaft 40. Each shaft 40 carries on its end a toothed wheel 42, Fig. 9, which gears with a toothed segment 44, mounted on a shaft 43. Each toothed wheel-segment 44 is connected with a type-wheel segment 45, which, as shown in Figs. 9 and 11, is provided with alternating large and small number types from O to 9. On the frame A there is pivoted at 46 a cover4'7 ,which extends over allthe sets l to V and which is held under the action of springs 4S 49 in the position shown in Fig. 9, and also carries a print-ing abutment-roller 50, with rubber pad 5l and a feeding-roller 52, and is provided with a handle Fixed to the support 47 at 54 is a cord 55, which passes over a pulley 57, mounted on the shaft 56. The pulley 57 carries an arm 58, with ink-pads 59, which extend over all the sets and which can be depressed, as indicated by dotted arrows, when the support 47 is raised, by means of the handle 53 through the medium of the cord 55, onto the types of the type-wheel arc 45 that is being operated at the time, while when the support 47 is released the said pads are shot back into the position shown in Fig. 9 by means of a spring GO, Fig. ll. Around the abutment-roller 50 there is led a paper strip G2, running off from the pulley 6l. Through a slot 63 a price-ticket or receiptform 64 can be inserted, which is then pressed against the rubber pad 5l. The printing of the paper strip G2 and of the price-ticket G4 is effected iirst by raising the support so that the ink-pads 59 are pressed down upon the types of the type-arcs 45 that" are presented at the time, and then by depressing the support 47 so that the paper strip 62 and the price-ticket 64 are pressed upon the types, which are provided with ink, Fig. 8. When a type-wheel arc 45 is in the O position, the printing apparatus will strike upon the type 0, whereas on operating any one rocking lever 3 the corresponding type-wheel are 45 will be rotated to a similar extent and the type corresponding to thisl stroke will enter in the path of the printing apparatus. The type-wheel arcs may obviously be provided at suitable points with types for the designations of units of value-such as, for example, (C 0.6,?) CCS, (61,79 (6 S, C( (15.77 anism for advancing the paper strip 62 is not shown in the drawings. It may obviously be made of any suitable construction. In order to prevent access to the printing parts during the printing operation, and thus to prevent tampering, there are provided in the casing 47 prongs G5, which, after depression of the casing 47 ,proj ect between the rims of the typewheels, and thus close the printing-places toward the outside, Fig. 8. To the casing 47 there is pivoted a protective cover 66, which is capable of being moved upon a hinge and which is intended to protect the printing apparatus from dirt and dust.
`The adding apparatus of each ratchet set l to V is provided with a ratchet or advancing apparatus constructed as follows: In each set the ratchet-wheel 6 gears with a toothed wheel 67, which is mounted loosely on a shaft 68,
' that is common to all the sets l to V, Figs. l, 3,
and 7. Each toothed wheel 67 is connected with the counting-disk 69 of the corresponding` set, which is provided with any desired number of type-numerals. In the arrangement shown in the drawings each countingdisk is provided with twenty types, so that each half-revolution of a counting-disk corresponds to the numbers O to, 9.7 Each counting-disk is provided on its facing the numbering-disk of the preceding ratchet set (indicating a smaller value) with a circle of uniformly-distributed pins or teeth 70. The ratchet apparatus is now such that at every completion of a row of types of a countingdiskthat is to say, on the completion of the path from the highest number 9 to the lowest number 0 -the counting-disk of the next following ratchet set (indicatin ga higher value) is advanced through a distance equal to the width of one tooth-that is to say, to the extent of one type-numeral. In the arrangement shown this operation takes place after each half-revolution of each countingdisk. The means for carrying out this operation are well known and may be of any desired construction.
In the apparatus shown the step-by-step advance of every two cooperating sets-such as, for example, l and ll-is effected by means of the levers 72,which are capable of rotating on shafts 7l and of which each is provided in the usual manner with a pawl 74 and is drawn by a spring 75 in the direction toward IOO IIO
the axle 68 of the counting-disk. Each lever 72 carries at its upper end a pin 76, which takes in a groove 77 of the corresponding counting-disk 69. The pawl 74 of the lever 72 of one set-for example, I-is so arranged that it can cooperate with the tooth or pins of the counting-disk 69 of the next following set II. The groove 77 of each countingdisk 69 rises gradually from the 0 point up to the place corresponding tothe highest number and then assumes the form of a radially directed slot 7 S. In the apparatus shown the groove 77 of the double series of numbers of the counting-disks consists of two similar branches adjoining one another. So long as the pin 76 slides in the rising part of the groove 77 the corresponding lever 72 is pressed outwardly, so that the pawl 74; remains out of engagement with the pins 70 of the next counting-disk; but, however, as soon as the pin'76 enters one of the radiallydirected slots 7 8 of the corresponding numbering-disk G9, Fig. 6, the lever 72 is drawn inward by the spring 75, whereby the next following countin gdisk is moved along to the extent of one tooth. The counting-disk 69, belonging to the pawl-lever 72, which is operating at the time, is also turned to Of7 On further rotation of the same the pin 76 enters again the rising portion of the groove 77, so that the pawl-lever 72 is pressed outwardly and the pawl 74 is placed out of operation.
In the step-by-step advancing mechanism hereinbefore described it may easily happen that after the advance is effected the counting-disk that effects the advance, or that one which is thrown into action, or both disks, may be rotated farther than necessary by the action of their inertia, which produces an incorrect operation of the apparatus. This drawback is-obviated according to this invention by means ofthe following arrangement: In each ratchet (I to V) there is mounted, so as to rotate upon a boss 79 of the lever 72, which `effects the advance, a pendulum-pawl 8O in such a manner that its upper end, when in a state of rest, is situated close to the path of the pins 70 of the counting-disk which is to be advanced, but out of engagement with the said pins. The lower part of each pendulum-pawl 8O is so constructed that when the pawl moves rapidly the said part has a tendency to remain in its position, so that it..follows the direction of movement later than the upper part of the pendulum. If now the lever 72 after the entrance of the pin 76 in one of the radial slots 7 S of the corresponding disk 69 be drawn inward by the spring 7 5,the pendulum-pawl 8O will be moved with the same, the upper part of the samev entering the path of the pins 70 of the numbering-disk to be thrown into operation and so preventing furthermovement of the latter, Fig. 10. The lower portion of the pendulumpawl follows the movement only after the counting-disk has been operated.

The apparatus may, however, be so modified that the pendulum-pawl 8O does not cooperate with the pins 70 of the numbering-disk to be thrown into gear, but
lwith a separate series of ratchet-teeth on the same. The action of each pendulum-pawl 80 is preferably further aided in each case by a corresponding spring Sl, which is so arranged that when the counting-disk to be thrown into gear is in the stationary position the said pawl enters with a curved part 82 between the pins 7 O of the counting-disk to be thrown into gear, while it isvpressed to one side during the advance movement by the pin which moves forward at the time, Fig. 6, and after the termination of theadvance movement it enters between the advancing and the next following pin, Fig. l0, so that it offers resistance to a further rotation of the countingdisk.` In order to be able to observe the numbers marked on the counting-disks, the casing 14 is provided with observation-holes, S3

The manipulation and mode of operation ofthe apparatus are as follows: First, the lid 22, Fig. l, is raised, whereby the alarm 35 is sounded. After the completed stroke of the lid 22the catch 33 of the same engages in the corresponding catch 34 of the frame A, so At the same in the recess 3l of the frame A and the rod 29 has been moved forward and the spindle 26 has been turned over in such a manner that its groove 27 releases the pawls 23, Fig. 2. During the movement of -the lid the rod 2O moves so that the shaft w is turned over in such a manner as to bring its recess u into the path of the pawls 7 and thus allow of the rotation of the rocking lever 3 of any one set I to V. Then the press-knob-for instance, 757- corresponding to the number to be indicated is pressed, Fig. a, whereby the corresponding tipping shaft 107 is turned over in such a manner as to limit the scope of the rocking lever 3. If now the key l of any one set be depressed, the corresponding rocking lever 3 will be rotated as far as the shaft wl. By means of the corresponding tooth arc 9, with toothed wheel l0, the number-drums 12 13 are carried along, so that the figure 7 is rendered visible in the observation-holes 14E 15 of the casing 16 for the purpose of being read olf and checked by the purchaser and the seller. By means of the pawl 5 of the operated rocking lever 3 the corresponding ratchet-wheel 6 of the adding apparatus is also moved, whereby the corresponding number-disk 88 is advanced to a corresponding extent. After the release of the press-knob k7 by the operator removing pressure therefrom the pawl 23 holds the rocking lever 3 and the num- IOO IOS

ber-drums 12 13 until the lid 22 is closed. Thus the numbers appearing in the observation-holes 14 and 15 remain visible for a time, so that any further alteration in the favor of the seller of the amounts shown is prevented. After the release of the press-knob 757 then any furtherdesired set can be operated in the same manner. If the number O is to be indicated in one set, then of course the said set must remain in the position of rest. If in a set the number 9 is to be shown and added up, then only the key 1 is to be depressed, because the press-knob kg, as already mentioned, is blind,and the stroke of the rocking lever 3 is then limited by the fixed lshaft wg. As soon as one of the number-disks `69 of any one set moves its prescribed amount the ratchet mechanism, Figs. 6, 7, and 10, hereinbefore described, acts to advance the Vnumber-disk of the next following set to the extent of one number. Vhen the numberdisks of the adding apparatus are in their limit positions, any suitable signaling or inwhereby the types (which present themselves at the time) of the type-wheel arcs 45, which are moved in the described manner by the rotation of the rocking levers 3, are provided with ink. The casing 47 for the printing apparatus 50 51 52 is depressed, Fig, 8, whereby the checkingfstrip 62 and the price-ticket 84, which is to be delivered to the purchaser, are printed in accordance with the adjustment at the time. After the release of the casing 47, which is moved by the springs 43 49 into its normal position, the price-ticket 64 can be delivered to the purchaser. After this operation the lid 22 is again closed, whereby the locking devices 23 of the rocking levers 3 are released bythe return movement of the rods 29 in the manner described, and the rocking levers 3 are returned, together with the number-drums 12 13, by means of the springs 18 into the O position, Fig. 1, while the movement beyond the O position is prevented by the stops 19. The ratchet-wheels 6 and the number-disks 69 of the adding apparatus are not moved back automatically into their initial position, but move on continuously, so that the several amounts indicated by the apparatus are continually added up by the adding apparatus.
The tampering of the machine cannot be effective, because the operation of the adding apparatus takes place only after the disengagement of the locking devices w. The arrangement in this case may be made such that the turning back of the ratchet-wheels 6 and number-disks 69 can be effected only with the aid of special operating devices, keys, or the like, which are kept in the custody of the pro prietor of the business or of a confidential employee. The cash-register herein described affords the possibility not only by uncovering t-he observation-holes S3, Fig. 1,of ascertaining the total amount of the amounts paid in, but also checking the several amounts by the sum tot-al from the paper strip 62 after the removal of the latter from the apparatus. It will be readily understood that the cash register herein described may be variously modified in respect of its construction while retaining the principle of the invention. For instance, instead of tive ratchet sets, as shown, any desired number of such sets may be employed. The lid 22, which serves to effect the locking and unlocking of the rocking lever 3, may be,
replaced by equivalent means-fou example, by a handle or the like.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of this invention, I declare that what I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a cash-register, an adding device provided with a ratchet-wheel 6 and devices for indicating the separate amounts paid in said devices being operated by means of a rotatable rocking lever 3 cooperating with ratchetwheel 6, in combination with means for the purpose of limiting the stroke of the rocking lever 3 of the indicating device the stop-keys 71: 7c9 for operating the limiting means and the keys independent of the stop-keys for operating the indicating mechanism.
2. In a cash-register an adding device provided with a ratchet-wheel 6 and devices for indicating the separate amounts paid in, consisting essentially of a rocking lever 3 capable of rotating, mounted loosely on the shaft 2 of said ratchet-wheel 6, and cooperating therewith (by means of pawl 5), and of number- drums 12, 13 operated by the said rocking lever, in combination with means for limiting the stroke of the rocking lever 3 in accordance with the value of any desired key 7s kf consisting of tipping shafts 2U lw8 which when in one position, gives free passage to a locking` device 7 which is provided on the rocking lever 3 and which by depressing the keys 7c 799 is moved into a position in which it will block the path of the lever-locking device 7 and thus prevent further rotation of the rocking lever 3, and in which the outermost on the tipping shafts 7o is made fixed so that it limits the greatest stroke of the rocking lever 3, substantially as hereinbe'fore described and for the purpose specified.
3. In a cash-register, an adding device provided with a ratchet-wheel 6, and devices operated by means of a rocking lever 3 coperating with the ratchet-wheel 6, for indicating the separate amounts paid in, in combination with a lid 22 of a money-till, and with means for preventing a rotation of the rocking lever 3 when the lid 22 is closed and for allowing such rot-ation only when the lid is opened, substantially as described and shown.
4. In a cash-register, an adding device pro ICO IIO
vided with a ratchet-wheel 6 and devices for indicating the separate amounts paid in, operated by means of a rocking lever 3 coperating with ratchet-wheel 6, in combination with the lid 22 of a money-till which when it is in its closed position sets by means of suitable mechanism 20, 2l, to hold a tipping shaft wo provided with a recess u@ in such a position that it blocks the path of a pawl 7 attached to the rocking lever 3 and thereby prevents the rocking lever 3 from rotating` out of the .O i position, while when the lid 22 is opened the tipping shaft wo is rotated in such a manner as to allow the pawl 7 to pass through its recess uo, substantially as hereinbefore described and for the purpose specified.
5. In a cash-register, the till, an adding device provided with a ratchet-wheel 6 and devices for indicating the separate amounts paid in, operated by meansof a rocking lever 3 cooperating with ratchet-wheel 6, in combination with means for the purpose of effecting a temporary locking of the backward rotation of the rockinglever 3, in the actuation of said rocking lever, and controlling means for said lock operated by the opening or closing of the till, substantially as hereinbefore described and for the purpose specified.
6. ln a cash-register, an adding device provided With a ratchet-wheel 6 and device for indicating the separate amounts paid in, operated by means of a rocking lever 3 coperating with the ratchet-wheel 6, in combination with the lid 22 of a money-till and with locking devices 23 for the rocking lever 3 which, when the lid 22 is closed, are raised by a tipping shaft 26 with groove 27 away from the rocking lever 3, while when the lid 22 is opened, the said locking devices are freed by suitablemechanism 2S, 29, 32 (which cause a rotation of the tipping shaft 26) by means of the groove 27 of the tipping shaft 26, so that said locking devices will, when the rocking lever 3 is operated, cause a locking of the same against rearward rotation which lookin g ceases only when the lid 22 is closed, substantially as hereinbefore described and for the purpose specified.
7. In acash-register, an adding device, the ratchet-wheel 6 connectedthereto, means for operating said ratchet-wheel, the rack 39 moving with the said wheel, the type-form, the rack thereon, the gear connection between the said racks, the pivoted casing 47 carrying the paper roll, and the printing-roller 50, and guide-roller 52, and the inking-pads, the said casing being arranged to be raised and lowered, substantially as described.
8. In a cash-register, an adding device provided with any desired number of countingdisks 69 and driven by means of a ratchetwheel 6, and devices for indicating the separate amounts paid in, operated by means of a rocking lever 3 cooperating with the ratchetwheel 6, in combination with means for effecting a step-by-step advance of the counting-disks 69 relatively to each other, and also with means for the purpose of preventing automatic further rotation of the counting-disks 69 by reason of their momentum at the termination of the advancing movement, consisting of a pendulum-pawl SO which is connected with the ratchet device 72 in such a manner that it is moved with the latter by the advance movement of the same, so that its upper portion engages in a ring of teeth or pins 70 of the counting-disks 69 which is to be thrown into gear, and the lower part of which pawl is so arranged that it follows this movement later than the upper portion which effects the temporary locking of the counting- `disks 69, substantially as hereinbefore described and for the purpose specified.
