IMPROVEMENT IN ORNAMENTING PTANO FORTE COVERS. o.
SPECIFICATION. TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, J. F. BURGESS, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved mode of Ornamenting Piano Forte Covers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and us'e the same.
The nature of my improvements consists in applying to India-rubber cloth, or to such cloth having a flocked surface, any suitable compound, such as India rubber or gutta percha made into a solution, or any other adhe- 'sive substance that will not break 011' or crumble on when the India rubber isstretched or handled, but yield and give with it, so as to avoid injury to the flock or bronze substance, (subsequently placed .thereon,) and then flocking or bronzing, or both, upon such compound or substance, and forming by. means thereof, and such flock or bronze, ornamental figures or'designs. t i
My mode of applying the designs is,- havinglprepared such compound or substance, I' first lay it on with a brush'or pencil, or print by means of it with blocks the form or shape of such figures as I wish to produce, arranging the several parts of the design, so that each different color or shade which I propose to employ shall be applied separately and successively according to the nature and complexity of the pattern. .In case of applying gold or bronze to the designs separately, or combined with colors, the same division of parts in the operation is necessary. When the application of the adhesive compound or substance is in the proper condition, that is to say, not so dry but that .the substance hereinafter mentioned will firmlyadhere to it, I apply flocking ofthe desired color, or bronze in the ordinary way of sifting it on in fine particles, until the part of the design thus prepared is sufliciently coated or flocked; it is then allowed to dry for several hours, more or less, according to the temperature and the humidity of the atmosphere imwhich the work is being done, when the surplus particles of flock or bronze are carefully brushed 05 from the cloth. It is then ready to rec'ive the application of another color of bronze or gold, as the case may be, on another part of the design, which is laid or printed first with the adhesive compound or substance in the same manner ,as before.' The operation is continued with difi'erent colors as often as necessary, until the whole designfis completed.
Having described my improvements, what I claim as my invention, is-- 1. Applying to- India-rubber cloth, or such cloth having a-flocked surface, ornamental figures or designs in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described. a a
2. A piano forte or table cover composed of an India-rubber cloth, or such cloth with flocked surface, having ornamental figures or designs placed thereon either in flock or bronze, or both, substantially as described.
