Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. BROWN, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland, and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Combined Coal-Hod and Sifter; and I hereby declare the following to be afull, l clear, and exact description, thereof, which will enable others to make and use my invention, reference being made to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which-- T Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my invention.

I 7 My invention consists in the combination, with a coal-hod, of a sifter of the form and construction hereiny after described. f v r p i A, in fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, represents a bed oblong in form, with sides parallel at the top thereof, and made straight to admit of the sliding of the sifter thereon. B shows, in the same figure, the sifter placed on the top of the hod. 0 indicates one of two flanges secured to either side of the sifter, and designed F to embrace the upper edges of the sides of the hod, as illustrated in the drawings. The width of the sifter is less than that of the hod, in order that it may be placed somewhat within the same. B, fig. 2, illustrates the form and construction of the sifter, being furnished'with the handle H, and the scoop or shovel part, S. The bottom is made either by perforating a piece of sheet metal, or using wire net-work instead. The sifter, can be r?" easily removed from the hod, as it simply rests upon the top thereof in the flanges c. The coal to be cleansed is dipped intofthe sifter, B, which is placed upon the top of the hod, A, and moved backward and forward bythe handle H. The shape of the sifter conforms to that of the hod, being curr ed at one end and square at the other, so that the extent of the motion of the sifter when in use is limited only by the length of the top of i i.
